Biography

Short Description

Helene Kafka, later known in religion as Sister Maria Restituta, was born on 1 May 1894 in Hussowitz near Brünn in Moravia, then a crown land of Austria-Hungary and now Husovice in Brno in the Czech Republic. Her family, of modest means, moved to Vienna while she was still a small child, and it was in the imperial capital that she grew up. After leaving school she worked as a domestic servant and in a shop before turning to hospital work. In 1914 she entered the congregation of the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, popularly called the Hartmann Sisters, taking the name Restituta in honor of an early Christian martyr. She was trained as a nurse and assigned to surgical service.

Sister Restituta spent most of her religious life at the hospital in Mödling, south of Vienna, where she became the sister in charge of the operating theatre. Contemporaries remembered her as a highly competent, energetic, and outspoken nurse, devoted to her patients and unafraid of hard work. After the annexation of Austria by Nazi Germany in 1938 she made no secret of her opposition to National Socialism. When a new hospital wing was opened she insisted on hanging a crucifix in every room, in defiance of official instructions that religious symbols be removed from public institutions. She also copied and circulated a satirical verse directed against Adolf Hitler. These acts, together with her reputation for anti-Nazi remarks, led to her denunciation.

The Gestapo arrested her on 18 February 1942. After months of imprisonment she was condemned to death on 29 October 1942 by a Nazi court on charges of aiding the enemy and preparing high treason. Appeals for clemency, including those from hospital colleagues who stressed her professional value as a surgical nurse, were rejected; leading figures in the regime wished to make an example of a religious sister who had publicly resisted its ideology. She remained in prison until 30 March 1943, when she was executed by guillotine at the Vienna Regional Court. Accounts from fellow prisoners describe her as calm, prayerful, and attentive to the needs of others during her confinement.

Pope John Paul II beatified her in Vienna on 21 June 1998, presenting her as a martyr who had given her life rather than deny her faith or accommodate a totalitarian system. Blessed Maria Restituta Kafka is commemorated especially in Austria and among Franciscan communities and is remembered as a witness to conscience in the medical and religious life of the twentieth century.
