Biography

Short Description

María Romero Meneses was born on 13 January 1902 in Granada, Nicaragua, into a well-to-do Catholic family. Standard biographical notices prepared for her cause name her parents as Félix Romero Arana and Ana Meneses Palazio and describe her as one of several siblings raised in the urban elite of early twentieth-century Granada. As a girl she suffered a serious bout of rheumatic fever that left her with lasting heart damage and, for a period, with paralysis. Salesian and diocesan accounts relate that she attributed her recovery to prayer to Mary Help of Christians and to Saint John Bosco, an episode that helped turn her toward the Salesian family rather than toward marriage or a purely secular career among her social class.

In her youth she entered the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Figlie di Maria Ausiliatrice), the congregation of women religious founded by Saint John Bosco and Saint Mary Domenica Mazzarello and commonly called the Salesian Sisters. After formation and profession she was assigned to the congregation’s educational apostolate. In 1931 her superiors sent her to San José, Costa Rica, where she would spend the greater part of her religious life, more than four decades. She taught subjects such as music, art, and typing in Salesian schools, but her public reputation grew chiefly from social work among the urban poor. She organized catechesis and recreation for children, sought food, medicine, and housing for families in marginalized neighborhoods, and appealed to more affluent Costa Ricans to fund clinics, kitchens, and other works of assistance.

In Costa Rica she became known as a practical organizer who joined Salesian educational methods to direct relief, and later Catholic writing often styles her a social apostle of that country. She promoted devotion to Mary Help of Christians and to the Eucharist, and she was associated with centers that offered schooling and material help to people who otherwise lacked them. Biographers emphasize that she continued this work despite chronic cardiac weakness stemming from her childhood illness, and that she moved between poor districts and the circles of potential benefactors. She remained a Nicaraguan sister of a worldwide congregation rather than a figure of local ecclesiastical office; her influence was pastoral and charitable rather than hierarchical.

She died of heart failure on 7 July 1977 in León, Nicaragua, at the age of seventy-five. A cause for beatification was introduced; a miracle attributed to her intercession was approved, and Pope John Paul II beatified her in Saint Peter’s Square on 14 April 2002. The Catholic Church keeps her liturgical memorial on 7 July. She has not been canonized. Veneration is strongest among the Salesians and in Nicaragua and Costa Rica, where her long apostolate is remembered, but a comprehensive list of formal patronages is not securely established in standard hagiographical sources.
