Biography
Maria Schininà was born on 10 April 1844 in Ragusa, in southeastern Sicily, then part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. She belonged to a well-to-do family of local standing; her parents were Giovanni Battista Schininà and Rosalia Cartia. Baptized the day after her birth, she was raised amid the comforts and social expectations of the provincial aristocracy and received a careful upbringing. In her youth she took part in the fashionable life of Ragusa, including dances and the theatre, and was known in a manner that reflected her family's rank. The death of her father in 1865 marked a decisive change. Grief and a deepening religious sense led her to give up worldly amusements and to turn toward prayer, penance, and service to those in need.
After this conversion she devoted herself to the poor and marginalized of Ragusa. She visited the sick in their homes and in hospital, assisted prisoners, cared for abandoned children and the elderly, and sought to help women living in moral or material distress. She became a tertiary of the Franciscan Third Order and cultivated a particular devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which later gave its name to the institute she founded. Relatives and some acquaintances opposed a woman of her class undertaking such public charitable work, yet she persisted. Over the following years other women joined her in a common life of poverty, prayer, and charity, first informally and then as a structured community in her native city.
In the later nineteenth century Schininà established the Congregation of the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, based in Ragusa, for education of the young and for a wide range of works of mercy among the needy of Sicily. In religion she was known as Mother Mary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The sisters combined a simple community life with an active apostolate. Schininà directed the new congregation as foundress and superior, seeking ecclesiastical approval and forming the sisters in devotion to the Sacred Heart. The institute remained modest during her lifetime but took firm root in Ragusa and the surrounding region.
Maria Schininà died in Ragusa on 1 June 1910. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 4 November 1990 in Saint Peter's Square and has not been canonized. She is venerated in the Roman Catholic Church as Blessed Maria Schininà. Her memory is kept especially by the Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, who continue charitable and educational work in her spirit, and her life is often presented as an example of conversion from privilege to evangelical poverty and of persistent service to the poor in a nineteenth-century Sicilian setting.
