Biography

Short Description

Anna Maria Tauscher was born on 19 June 1855 in the village of Sandow in Brandenburg, then part of the Kingdom of Prussia and today located in Poland under the name Sądów. She was the daughter of a Lutheran pastor, Hermann Traugott Tauscher, and grew up in a devout Evangelical household. Her childhood and youth were marked by the religious culture of Prussian Lutheranism and by an early sensitivity to human suffering. She received an education that prepared her to teach, and as a young adult she worked as a teacher, including in settings that brought her into contact with neglected, poor, and abandoned children. Those experiences left a lasting impression and later informed the apostolate of the congregation she would found.

Despite her Lutheran upbringing, Tauscher felt increasingly drawn to the Catholic Church. After a period of study and interior struggle she was received into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church in 1888. The conversion caused a deep rift with her family, who did not accept her decision. She then sought a form of religious life that would allow both contemplative prayer in the Carmelite tradition and concrete service to children without homes or families. Existing communities did not fully match that combination of contemplative and social aims, and she therefore began, in Berlin in 1891, a new religious family. She took the name Maria Teresa of St. Joseph. The community became known as the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus, dedicated to the Heart of Jesus and to providing shelter and care for needy children, the elderly, and the homeless.

The foundation years were difficult. The sisters lived in poverty, moved from place to place, and encountered suspicion from civil and sometimes ecclesiastical authorities. Maria Teresa had to defend the identity and purpose of her institute while seeking canonical recognition. She established houses beyond Berlin and eventually looked to the Netherlands as a more stable base. The motherhouse was settled in Sittard, in the province of Limburg. From there the congregation spread to other parts of Europe and to North America. Maria Teresa herself traveled in the service of the foundations, enduring the strains of leadership, misunderstanding, and the political tensions of the early twentieth century, including the era of the First World War and its aftermath.

In her later years she continued to govern the congregation from Sittard and to form the sisters in a spirit of Carmelite prayer, reparation, and practical charity. She died there on 20 September 1938. The institute she founded survived and grew after her death, remaining active in the care of children and the elderly in a number of countries. The Catholic Church recognized her heroic virtue and the enduring fruit of her work by beatifying her. Pope Benedict XVI beatified Maria Teresa of St. Joseph on 13 May 2006 in Saint Peter's Square in Rome. She is venerated as a foundress who united Carmelite spirituality with a determined service to those who lacked a home or a family.
