Biography

Short Description

Maria Teresia Ledóchowska was born on 29 April 1863 at Loosdorf in Lower Austria, then in the Austrian Empire, the daughter of Count Antoni Maria Halka-Ledóchowski, of the Polish noble house of Halka-Ledóchowski, and Countess Josefina von Salis-Zizers. The family combined Polish Catholic tradition with life in the Habsburg lands. Several siblings entered distinguished religious careers: her brother Włodzimierz later became Superior General of the Society of Jesus, and her sister Ursula (later canonized) founded the Ursuline Sisters of the Agonizing Heart of Jesus. After Count Antoni’s death in 1885, Maria Teresia entered court service as lady-in-waiting to Princess Alice of Bourbon-Parma, the widowed Grand Duchess of Tuscany, at Salzburg.

While still at court she encountered the missionary and anti-slavery appeals of Cardinal Charles Lavigerie of Algiers concerning the East African slave trade. That encounter fixed her vocation. In 1889 she began publishing the periodical Echo from Africa (Echo aus Afrika) to inform European Catholics and to raise funds for missions. She left court life in the early 1890s to devote herself entirely to this work. On 29 April 1894 she founded at Salzburg the Sodality of Saint Peter Claver for the African Missions, named for the Jesuit Peter Claver, apostle of enslaved Africans at Cartagena. The sodality developed into the religious congregation of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver (Claverian Sisters). Its purpose was to support missionaries through the press, fundraising, and the recruitment of helpers.

Under her direction the work spread through several European countries, missionary literature was issued in many languages, and the generalate was established in Rome. She was widely called the “Mother of the African Missions.” She remained at the head of the institute until her death.

Maria Teresia Ledóchowska died in Rome on 6 July 1922. Pope Paul VI beatified her on 19 October 1975. Her liturgical memorial is 6 July. She has not been canonized. Her remains are kept at the generalate of the Missionary Sisters of St. Peter Claver in Rome.
