Biography

Short Description

Maria Torribia, venerated in Spain as Santa María de la Cabeza, was a Castilian peasant woman of the twelfth century whose memory is bound to that of her husband, Saint Isidore the Farmer (San Isidro Labrador). Traditional accounts place her birth in the hamlet of Caraquiz, near Uceda in the present-day province of Guadalajara, then part of the Kingdom of Castile. No contemporary record preserves a year of birth, and almost nothing independent of later pious legend can be verified about her childhood or family of origin. She entered the historical tradition as the spouse of Isidore, a hired agricultural laborer employed on estates in the Madrid area, often linked in the stories to the landowner Juan de Vargas.

The couple lived in poverty in and around Madrid. Hagiography records that they had a son, sometimes called Illán, who fell into a well and was drawn out unharmed after his parents prayed; the same tradition holds that, after this event or after the boy's early death, María and Isidore lived thereafter in continence. Tales of Isidore's charity to the poor, of angels ploughing in his stead while he prayed, and of springs of water appearing in the fields frequently include María as a devout partner who shared his hardships and his faith. These stories, written down centuries later, present her as a model of humility and married piety among the rural poor rather than as a nun or a member of a religious order.

After Isidore's death, customarily dated to 1130, María is said to have left Madrid and returned to her native district, where she lived in seclusion until her own death, placed by the received chronology of her cult in 1175. Her popular epithet de la Cabeza (of the Head) refers to a relic: her skull was preserved apart from the rest of her body and, from the later Middle Ages, was carried in public procession, especially when Madrid suffered drought and the people sought rain. Her remains, together with those of Isidore, came to be kept in Madrid; they are associated today with the Collegiate Church of San Isidro.

Devotion to María grew with the fame of her husband, who was canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV. Her own cult was formally confirmed when Pope Innocent XII beatified her in 1697. She did not receive a separate modern papal canonization, but Spanish liturgical and popular usage commonly styles her a saint. She is honored as co-patroness of Madrid, with a feast on 9 September. Beyond that civic patronage, the historical record of her life remains thin and is inseparable from the legendary cycle of San Isidro; what can be said with caution is that a twelfth-century Castilian laywoman, wife of a farm laborer, became, through relic, procession, and civic religion, a lasting figure in the identity of Madrid.
