Biography

Short Description

Mariam Vattalil was born in 1954 in the village of Pulluvazhy in the Ernakulam district of Kerala, in southern India, into a Syro-Malabar Catholic family. She was the daughter of Paily and Eliswa Vattalil and was baptized Mariam. Raised in a devout household, she felt a vocation to religious life from adolescence. In the early 1970s she entered the Franciscan Clarist Congregation, a community of women religious in the Syro-Malabar tradition, and received the name Rani Maria. After formation she professed vows and was sent from Kerala to missionary work in the Hindi-speaking regions of northern and central India.

For years she served in Madhya Pradesh, living in community and working among Adivasi (tribal) people and landless agricultural laborers in and around Udainagar in the area of the Diocese of Indore. Her apostolate joined catechesis and pastoral care with social action: she helped the poor obtain land records and government benefits, form self-help groups, and resist usury and illegal eviction. That work, grounded in the Gospel and Catholic social teaching, won her the trust of the marginalized and the hostility of landlords and moneylenders who saw her as a threat. Those who knew her described a prayerful, determined sister closely identified with the poorest.

On 25 February 1995 she boarded a bus at Udainagar bound for Indore. During the journey a hired assassin, later identified as Samandar Singh, attacked her with a knife, stabbing her repeatedly. She was pushed from the moving vehicle and died of her wounds by the roadside. The killing was treated as a contract murder intended to stop her advocacy for the landless. Singh was arrested, tried, and imprisoned. In later years her mother Eliswa and other relatives visited him, offered forgiveness, and were photographed embracing him; he subsequently spoke of remorse and religious conversion. The episode became a widely cited example of Christian forgiveness in modern India.

Church authorities investigated her death as possible martyrdom. After diocesan and Roman processes she was recognized as having been killed in hatred of the faith, her social witness being inseparable from her religious consecration. Pope Francis approved her beatification, celebrated in Indore on 4 November 2017, with Cardinal Angelo Amato presiding as papal legate. She is venerated as Blessed Rani Maria Vattalil. Her tomb at Udainagar has become a place of pilgrimage, and her feast is kept on 25 February, the anniversary of her death.
