Biography

Blessed Marian Górecki was a Polish Roman Catholic priest and one of the 108 Martyrs of World War II. He was born on 2 May 1903 in Poznań, then in the Province of Posen in the German Empire. He received a Catholic upbringing and secondary education in his native city and entered the seminary. Ordained to the priesthood in 1928, he began pastoral work in the restored Polish state after the partitions, serving as a diocesan priest rather than as a member of a religious order.

In the 1930s he was assigned to ministry among the Polish Catholic minority in the Free City of Danzig (Gdańsk). There he worked as a priest and religious educator, supporting parish life, Polish schools, and Catholic associations in a city whose German-dominated government grew increasingly hostile to Poles and to the Church as National Socialism advanced. Together with other Polish clergy in Danzig, including priests later beatified with him, he was a public representative of Polish Catholic identity in a tense borderland.

On 1 September 1939, the day Germany invaded Poland, the Gestapo arrested Polish leaders in Danzig, including Father Górecki. He was held in local prisons and then among the first inmates of the Stutthof concentration camp, set up near Danzig in the opening days of the war. Clergy in the camp were singled out for humiliation and brutality. On 22 March 1940 he was taken from Stutthof with a group of prisoners that included other priests and was shot in the forests of Piaśnica in Pomerania, a principal site of the Intelligenzaktion massacres of the Polish elite. He was thirty-six years old. The victims were buried in mass graves in the forest.

Pope John Paul II beatified Marian Górecki on 13 June 1999 in Warsaw, together with 107 other Polish victims of Nazi persecution known collectively as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. The Church honours him as a martyr who died in odium fidei, remaining faithful to his priesthood under occupation. The group is commemorated on 12 June. His memory is kept especially in Pomerania and among Polish Catholics as an example of pastoral fidelity amid totalitarian persecution.
