Biography

Short Description

Marian Konopiński was born on 10 January 1907 in the village of Kluczewo in Greater Poland (Wielkopolska). At the time of his birth that region belonged to the Prussian Province of Posen in the German Empire; after the First World War it became part of the restored Polish state. He was a Pole and a Latin-rite Catholic, formed for the secular (diocesan) priesthood rather than for a religious order. He studied in the seminary of the Archdiocese of Poznań and was ordained a priest on 12 June 1932. Reliable accounts do not make him a public intellectual or a founder of a movement; they present him as a parish priest of the Poznań church in the last years of the Second Polish Republic.

After ordination he served as a vicar in the Poznań archdiocese. Standard Polish martyrological notices assign him parish work at Lwówek and, later, at the church of Saint Martin in Poznań. His ministry therefore belonged to ordinary pastoral life in western Poland between the wars, in a territory still marked by the long Prussian partition and by the rebuilding of Polish Catholic institutions after 1918. Nothing in the surviving public record suggests marriage or children; he lived under the Latin discipline of clerical celibacy.

The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 was followed, in Greater Poland, by annexation into the Reich as Reichsgau Wartheland and by a deliberate campaign against the Polish clergy and intelligentsia. Konopiński was arrested in October 1939 and held at Fort VII in Poznań, a Gestapo prison used against the Polish elite. He was then deported to the Dachau concentration camp in Bavaria, which the Nazi authorities made a principal place of imprisonment for Catholic priests, above all Poles. Large numbers of Polish diocesan clergy died there from hunger, labour, disease, maltreatment, and, in some cases, camp medical procedures. Konopiński died at Dachau on 1 January 1943. Camp victims were commonly cremated; no verified personal burial place is recorded.

On 13 June 1999, in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified one hundred and eight Poles killed during the Second World War in odium fidei, among them Marian Konopiński. The group is known as the 108 Martyrs of World War II. Their collective liturgical commemoration is 12 June. Konopiński has not been canonized, and no widely attested individual patronages (of places, professions, or causes) are attached to his name apart from his place in that group of martyrs. He is remembered as a priest of the Archdiocese of Poznań who died at Dachau under the German occupation of Poland.
