Biography
Marian Skrzypczak was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest and martyr of the Second World War, later numbered among the 108 Martyrs of World War II. He was born on 25 March 1909 in Janowiec in Greater Poland (Wielkopolska), a region then under Prussian administration within the German Empire. He grew up in a Polish Catholic family in the last years of the partitions and came of age after Poland recovered independence in 1918. He entered seminary formation for the Archdiocese of Gniezno and was ordained a priest in the 1930s. He remained a secular (diocesan) clergyman rather than a member of a religious order and lived under the Latin-rite discipline of clerical celibacy.
In the years immediately before the war he served as a parish vicar, including at the parish of Płonkowo in Kuyavia, near Inowrocław. His ministry consisted of the ordinary work of a young assistant priest in a rural congregation: celebration of the sacraments, catechesis, and pastoral care of the faithful. The German invasion of Poland in September 1939 brought that district under Nazi occupation within days. Polish clergy were among the groups targeted early in the occupation, as the occupiers sought to break religious and national leadership in annexed and occupied Polish lands.
On 5 October 1939, only weeks after the start of the occupation, Father Skrzypczak was killed by German forces in Płonkowo. He was thirty years old. Local memory and the documentation later assembled for his cause of beatification present the killing as a deliberate act of violence against a Catholic priest who had remained with his parishioners. Precise reconstructions of the shooting vary in secondary accounts; what is consistently attested is the date, place, and fact of his death at the hands of the occupiers at the outset of German rule in the area.
The Catholic Church judged his death a martyrdom suffered in hatred of the faith within the wider Nazi persecution of the Polish Church. Pope John Paul II beatified him in Warsaw on 13 June 1999 together with 107 other Polish victims of the Second World War. The 108 Blessed Martyrs of World War II are commemorated liturgically on 12 June. Blessed Marian Skrzypczak has not been canonized. Beyond the securely recorded facts of his birth, priestly ministry in the Gniezno archdiocese, and martyrdom at Płonkowo, published sources on his childhood, family, and inner life remain relatively sparse, as is common for many of the lesser-known members of this large group of blesseds.
