Biography

Short Description

Mariana of the Purification, known in Portuguese as Mariana da Purificação, was a Discalced Carmelite nun of seventeenth-century Portugal. Notices in Portuguese ecclesiastical and conventual sources place her birth in Lisbon in 1623. Almost nothing is recorded of her family or of her life before she entered religion. The political setting of her youth was the closing phase of the Iberian Union and the Portuguese Restoration War that began in 1640. In the early 1640s she sought admission to the monastery of Discalced Carmelite nuns dedicated to Saint Teresa of Jesus in Carnide, then a locality on the northern edge of Lisbon. She received the Carmelite habit and, after the novitiate, made her profession, taking the name Mariana of the Purification in honour of the Virgin Mary under the mystery of the Purification.

The community she joined belonged to the Teresian reform introduced into Portugal in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Discalced Carmelite life was strictly enclosed, poor, and directed toward contemplative prayer according to the constitutions of Saint Teresa. Mariana spent some five decades in this setting. Later pious accounts, written in the manner typical of Baroque Carmelite hagiography, present her as a nun of marked recollection, obedience, and penitential fervour. They speak of interior sufferings and of mystical graces, including visions, of a kind frequently attributed to holy women in Iberian cloisters of the period. Such reports cannot be independently corroborated from non-devotional documents and should be treated with the reserve historians apply to that genre.

Mariana died in the Carnide monastery in 1695 and was buried within the convent precincts. A local reputation for holiness attached to her memory, as often occurred with nuns whose lives had impressed their sisters, and some popular veneration appears to have continued at the site. No cause of beatification or canonization is known to have been completed in Rome, and she does not appear in the Roman Martyrology. She is therefore not numbered among the officially recognized blesseds or saints of the Discalced Carmelite Order.

Because she remained an enclosed nun of no public office, the surviving documentation is thin. References to her occur chiefly in Portuguese Carmelite chronicles, necrologies of the Carnide house, and later compilations of pious biographies. Modern critical scholarship has devoted little attention to her, and many elementary facts—the names of her parents, any letters or spiritual notes she may have left, and the precise character of prodigies later ascribed to her—remain uncertain or unexplored outside specialized archives. She stands as an example of the many locally remembered but historically obscure contemplative women of early modern Catholic Europe.
