Biography

Short Description

Mariangela Virgili was born on 10 October 1661 in Pietracamela, a small mountain village in the Abruzzo region of what was then the Kingdom of Naples. She belonged to a poor family of modest social standing and grew up amid the rural hardship typical of the Gran Sasso area. From childhood she displayed a marked inclination toward prayer and penance. Later biographical accounts describe her as spending much time in the parish church, reciting the rosary, meditating on the Passion of Christ, and practicing acts of self-denial. Formal schooling was limited, as was common for girls of her class in seventeenth-century southern Italy.

As a young woman she felt called to a more radical following of Christ while remaining in her native village. At about the age of eighteen she entered the Third Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, making profession as a Carmelite tertiary. This allowed her to live Carmelite spirituality of contemplative prayer and detachment without entering a cloistered convent. She supported herself by simple labor, lived in evangelical poverty, and never married. Her life was characterized by frequent reception of the sacraments, prolonged prayer, fasting, and service to neighbors in need. She placed herself under the direction of priests associated with the Carmelite order and the local diocese.

Over the decades Virgili became known throughout the surrounding district as a woman of God. People attributed to her various mystical graces, including ecstasies and interior locutions, and many sought her counsel in matters of conscience. She was remembered for her charity toward the sick and the destitute, often giving away what little she had. She also endured physical sufferings and periods of spiritual darkness, which her admirers interpreted as participation in the Cross. She remained in Pietracamela until the end of her life, dying there on 6 November 1734.

A popular cult developed after her death. The faithful of Pietracamela and nearby towns regarded her as a saint and invoked her intercession. In due course a formal cause of beatification was opened. After historical and theological examination, Pope Benedict XVI, on 19 December 2009, authorized the Congregation for the Causes of Saints to publish the decree on her heroic virtues. She is therefore honored with the title Venerable. She has not been beatified or canonized, and no universal feast day has been assigned to her. Her memory is preserved locally in Abruzzo and among members of the Carmelite family.
