Biography

Short Description

Mariano Arciero was born in 1707 in Contursi, a town in the province of Salerno in what was then the Kingdom of Naples, in southern Italy (the modern comune is Contursi Terme, in Campania). He came from a Catholic family of ordinary means and received his education and priestly formation in Naples, the capital of the kingdom and one of the largest cities in eighteenth-century Europe. He was ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Naples in 1731. His entire ministry was exercised as a diocesan, or secular, priest rather than as a member of a religious order, a fact that shaped both his way of life and the character of his apostolate among the urban population of Naples.

In the decades after his ordination Arciero became known in Naples for preaching, for the ministry of confession, and for the spiritual direction of clergy and laity. Eighteenth-century Naples was a city of sharp social contrasts, with a large poor population living in crowded neighborhoods. He devoted much of his energy to pastoral work among the poor and the neglected, combining popular missions and catechesis with personal charity. He was reputed to live in notable austerity, giving to the needy what he received, and to spend long hours in prayer and in the confessional. He was sought as a guide by people of various ranks of society. Surviving accounts of his life, which come chiefly from the later beatification process and from local tradition, present him as a model of the zealous diocesan priest of the baroque and early modern Italian Church. His ministry spanned the later Austrian period of the Kingdom of Naples and the Bourbon restoration of the kingdom from the 1730s onward.

Arciero remained in Naples for the rest of his life and died there in 1788, at about eighty-one years of age. After his death a reputation for holiness persisted among the faithful of Naples and of his native Contursi. The Archdiocese of Naples eventually promoted his cause of beatification. In the early twenty-first century the Holy See recognized a miracle attributed to his intercession, and Pope Benedict XVI authorized his beatification. The beatification ceremony was celebrated in Naples on 24 June 2012, with Cardinal Angelo Amato, then Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presiding as papal legate. Blessed Mariano Arciero has not been canonized. His liturgical commemoration is kept on 16 February, the anniversary of his death. He is remembered primarily in Campania, especially in Naples and Contursi Terme, as a priest of charity and of the confessional.

Because Arciero was never a bishop, a religious founder, or a writer of major published works, the documentary record of his life is thinner than that of better-known Neapolitan saints of the same era. What can be stated with confidence is that he was an eighteenth-century diocesan priest of Naples, born in Contursi in 1707 and deceased in Naples in 1788, whose pastoral reputation among the poor and as a confessor led to his beatification by the Catholic Church in 2012. He is not known to have held any episcopal or patriarchal office, and he lived as a celibate Latin-rite priest.
