Biography

Short Description

Mariantonia Samà was born on 2 March 1875 in the small Calabrian town of Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio, in the province of Catanzaro in southern Italy, to Cosimo Samà and Maria Caterina Zoccali. She was baptized on the day of her birth. The family belonged to the rural poor of the Ionian hinterland; her father died while she was still a child, leaving her mother to raise her in conditions of marked material hardship. Like other peasant children of the district she was expected to help with work in the countryside. In 1886, at about eleven years of age, she fell into a ravine while gathering wood with her mother. After being rescued she began to suffer violent convulsions. Local people interpreted the attacks as demonic possession, and she was taken to shrines in the region, including the sanctuary of Santa Maria della Stella at Pazzano. Tradition in the cause for her beatification holds that she was delivered from the affliction but left paralyzed, and from that time she remained confined to bed for the rest of her life.

She spent nearly seven decades in a tiny room of the family dwelling, a space that became the setting of a hidden life of prayer, patience, and voluntary acceptance of suffering. Unable to walk or to take part in ordinary village labour, she oriented her days toward the Eucharist, devotion to the Virgin Mary, and the offering of her physical pain in union with the Passion of Christ. Priests brought her Communion as often as circumstances allowed. Neighbours, pilgrims, and eventually clergy and religious from a wider area came to the bedside to ask her prayers and counsel. She acquired a local reputation for spiritual discernment, serenity under extreme limitation, and words of comfort to the afflicted, and was already spoken of in the town as a living saint long before any formal ecclesiastical process began. She never married, had no children, and did not enter a religious institute; her vocation was that of a laywoman living a consecrated-style life in the world, entirely within the domestic and parish setting of Sant'Andrea Apostolo dello Ionio.

Mariantonia Samà died in her hometown on 27 May 1953, at the age of seventy-eight. Her funeral drew a large crowd, a sign of the devotion that had grown around her during her lifetime. She was first buried in the local cemetery; in the course of the later canonical process her remains were transferred to the parish church of Sant'Andrea Apostolo, where they are now venerated. The Archdiocese of Catanzaro-Squillace promoted her cause. Pope Francis authorized the decree of her heroic virtues on 20 January 2017, declaring her Venerable. After the recognition of a miracle attributed to her intercession, she was beatified on 3 October 2021 at Catanzaro; Cardinal Marcello Semeraro, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided in the name of Pope Francis. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 27 May, the anniversary of her death. She has not been canonized. Historical knowledge of her inner life depends largely on local testimony and the acts of the beatification process rather than on a large body of her own writings; the documented core of her biography remains the long, publicly witnessed endurance of paralysis, poverty, and prayer in a remote Calabrian parish from the late nineteenth century until the mid-twentieth.
