Biography
Marie-Adolphine was a Dutch Roman Catholic religious sister of the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary and is venerated as one of the Martyr Saints of China. She was born Anna Dierkx in 1866 at Ossendrecht in the province of North Brabant in the Netherlands. She grew up in poverty. After her mother died she worked to help support her family, including as a domestic servant. She discerned a vocation to religious life and to the foreign missions and entered the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, a congregation founded in the nineteenth century by Hélène de Chappotin de Neuville, known in religion as Mother Mary of the Passion. The institute combined Franciscan spirituality with missionary apostolate among the poor.
Following her formation in Europe, she was sent in the late nineteenth century to the Catholic mission in Shanxi in northern China, then under the Qing dynasty. The Franciscan vicariate based at Taiyuan included European missionaries and Chinese clergy and faithful. The sisters of her congregation undertook catechesis, nursing, and other works of charity, including care of the destitute and of children. In 1900 the Boxer Rebellion, an anti-foreign and anti-Christian uprising, spread through northern China. In Shanxi the governor Yuxian adopted a policy of violent suppression of Christians and foreigners.
On 9 July 1900 Marie-Adolphine was executed at Taiyuan together with two Franciscan bishops, several priests and seminarians, six other Franciscan Missionaries of Mary, and many Chinese Catholics. The killings are known as the Taiyuan massacre and form one of the principal episodes of Christian martyrdom during the Boxer crisis. Contemporary testimony presented the sisters as going to death with prayer and steadfastness. Their deaths belonged to a wider persecution in which both foreign missionaries and Chinese Christians were killed.
The Catholic Church subsequently recognized the Taiyuan victims as martyrs. Marie-Adolphine was beatified by Pope Pius XII in 1946 and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000 among the one hundred and twenty Martyr Saints of China. The martyrs of China are commemorated on 9 July. She is remembered as a missionary sister of humble Dutch origin who died for the Christian faith in China at the turn of the twentieth century.
