Biography

Short Description

Maria Caterina Troiani was born Costanza Troiani on 19 January 1813 in Giuliano, a town in the Papal States now known as Giuliano di Roma in Lazio. She was formed in a Catholic household during the Napoleonic occupation and the Restoration in central Italy. Her mother died while she was still a child. In a region where Franciscan tertiaries and women’s convents were a familiar part of religious life, she showed an early inclination to prayer and to consecration. In 1829 she entered the monastery of the Franciscan Tertiary Sisters in nearby Ferentino and received the religious name Maria Caterina of Saint Rose.

She spent about three decades in the Ferentino community, living under a Franciscan tertiary rule that combined regular observance with works of charity, and in time she was made superior of the house. In the 1850s the Franciscan missions and the Apostolic Vicariate in Egypt sought women religious who could teach girls and assist the poor in Cairo. Maria Caterina accepted that invitation. In 1859 she left Italy with a small group of sisters and established a community in Cairo dedicated to the education of girls, the care of orphans and abandoned children, and other works of mercy among Copts, other Christians, Muslims, and the urban poor.

From that foundation she organized a new religious family, the Franciscan Missionaries of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, also known as the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Egypt. She served as first superior of the institute, which joined Franciscan spirituality to an active missionary and educational apostolate. The sisters’ schools and charitable houses grew in Cairo despite the ordinary hardships of a nineteenth-century foreign mission: climate, language, limited resources, and the social conditions of the Khedivate. The congregation obtained ecclesiastical recognition over time and drew vocations for work in Egypt and later in other countries.

Maria Caterina remained in Cairo for the rest of her life, directing the sisters and sharing their poverty and labor. She died there on 6 May 1887. A reputation for charity, humility, and missionary fidelity continued in her institute and among those who had known her work in Egypt and in Italy. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 14 April 1985. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 6 May. She has not been canonized. The congregation she founded continues as a Franciscan missionary family.
