Biography

Short Description

Marie-Clémentine Anuarite Nengapeta was born on 29 December 1939 at Wamba in the northeastern Belgian Congo, in the region that later formed part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. She belonged to the Wabudu (Budu) people. Her father, Amisi Batsuru, had been a soldier and had followed traditional religion before contact with Christianity; her mother was Isude Julienne. Anuarite was one of several daughters in the household. Catholic missionary work was then expanding in Orientale Province, and she received baptism under the name Alphonsine in the mid-1940s. Her childhood was spent in a rural setting shaped by the meeting of local custom and the mission Church. She attended mission schools that prepared girls for family life and, for a smaller number, for religious vocation.

Drawn to consecrated life, she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family (Soeurs de la Sainte Famille), an institute of African sisters linked to the diocese of Wamba and to the mission at Bafwabaka. She received the religious habit in 1959 and took the name Marie-Clémentine. The congregation’s work was education, catechesis, and care of the sick in a part of the Congo where locally recruited sisters were still relatively few. As a young professed sister she lived ordinary community life, taught, and shared the round of prayer and manual work. Later testimony for her cause described her as obedient, cheerful, and firm in her vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience.

Congolese independence in 1960 was followed by the Congo Crisis: army mutinies, secessions, and foreign intervention. In 1964 the Simba rebellion, an insurgency in the northeast, overran towns including Isiro, then still commonly known as Paulis. Rebel bands often targeted missionaries, educated Congolese, and religious houses. In late November 1964 Simba forces seized the convent where Sister Anuarite and her companions were living. A rebel officer, Colonel Pierre Olombe, attempted to take her as his concubine. She refused, invoking her religious consecration and her vow of chastity, and she encouraged other sisters to resist as well.

According to the testimony of fellow sisters and others gathered in the diocesan inquiry, she was beaten with a rifle and stabbed after she continued to refuse. She died of her injuries on 1 December 1964, at the age of twenty-four. Witnesses reported that she asked God to forgive her killer. Church authorities later judged the death to be martyrdom, suffered in hatred of the faith and in defense of her vow of virginity. She was buried at Isiro.

Pope John Paul II beatified her on 15 August 1985 in Kinshasa during an apostolic journey to Zaire, presenting her as a model of fidelity for African Catholics and for consecrated women. She was the first native Congolese woman raised to the honors of the altar. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 1 December. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo and among African religious communities she is remembered as a twentieth-century virgin martyr whose brief life was spent in ordinary convent work and whose death was bound to the violence of the post-independence wars.
