Biography

Short Description

Marie Adélaïde Clotilde Xavière of France was born in 1759 at the Palace of Versailles, daughter of Louis, Dauphin of France, and of Maria Josepha of Saxony, and thus a granddaughter of King Louis XV. Her brothers included the future kings Louis XVI, Louis XVIII, and Charles X; her younger sister was Madame Élisabeth. Both of her parents died during her childhood—the Dauphin in 1765 and Maria Josepha in 1767—and she was thereafter raised at the French court. She received a careful religious education typical of Bourbon princesses of the period. Court gossip nicknamed her "Gros-Madame" because of her stout figure, a humiliation she is reported to have accepted without bitterness.

In 1775 she was married to Charles Emmanuel, Prince of Piedmont, heir of Victor Amadeus III of Sardinia. After a proxy ceremony in France she travelled to Savoy and took up residence at the court of Turin. The marriage produced no children, yet it was widely described as a close and devout partnership. At Turin, Clotilde became known for prayer, fasting, and charity, and she adopted a simpler style of life than she had known at Versailles. She remained deeply attached to her French family and followed events in France with anxiety as political crisis deepened in the later eighteenth century.

The Revolution destroyed the world of her youth. Louis XVI was executed in 1793 and Madame Élisabeth in 1794; Clotilde went into mourning and devoted herself still more to religion and to the relief of French exiles. In 1796 her husband succeeded as Charles Emmanuel IV, King of Sardinia, but French armies already occupied Savoy and Nice and in 1798 seized Piedmont. The king and queen were compelled to leave Turin. They took refuge on the island of Sardinia and later moved among several Italian cities as the war continued. Throughout exile Clotilde was remarked for patience, almsgiving, and care for those who shared her displacement.

She died in Naples in 1802, still in her early forties, after an illness contracted in exile. Charles Emmanuel, broken by her death, abdicated later that year in favour of his brother Victor Emmanuel I and withdrew into a life of religion. Clotilde was buried in Naples at the church of Santa Caterina a Chiaia. Her reputation for holiness was already strong among Savoyard and émigré circles. Pope Pius VII, who had known the hardships of the revolutionary and Napoleonic years, declared her Venerable in 1808 in recognition of a life judged to have been of heroic virtue. She has not been beatified or canonized, and she is not assigned an official feast day in the General Roman Calendar.
