Biography

Short Description

Marie Elekta of Jesus (in Czech, Marie Elekta z Ježíše or Marie Elekta od Ježíše) was a Discalced Carmelite nun and the first prioress of the Teresian Carmel in Prague. Born Kateřina Eufemie Přehořovská z Kvasejovic in Prague in 1605, she belonged to a Catholic noble family of Bohemia, the Přehořovský of Kvasejovice. Her childhood and youth coincided with the aftermath of the Bohemian Revolt and the Battle of White Mountain, when the Habsburg monarchy imposed a thorough recatholicization of the Czech lands. In this climate she developed a vocation to the strictly contemplative life of the Discalced Carmelites, the order reformed in the sixteenth century by Teresa of Ávila and John of the Cross.

No monastery of Discalced Carmelite nuns existed in Bohemia during her early adulthood. The first such foundation in Prague, the convent of St. Joseph in the New Town, was established in the mid-seventeenth century with support from the court and the local Catholic aristocracy. Kateřina entered the order, taking the religious name Marie Elekta of Jesus. She was appointed the community’s first prioress and thus bore the responsibility of implanting the Teresian constitutions, the practice of enclosure, and the life of prayer and penance in a new and still fragile house.

As prioress she governed a small community of nuns who combined choir office, mental prayer, and manual work according to the Carmelite tradition. The early years of the Prague Carmel unfolded in a city still recovering from war, epidemic, and economic strain. Later Carmelite memory presents Marie Elekta as a model of religious observance and maternal care for her sisters, though surviving published documentation of her personal writings or particular miracles is scarce. Her leadership helped secure the presence of Discalced Carmelite nuns in Bohemia for subsequent generations.

Marie Elekta of Jesus died in Prague in 1663. She was buried in connection with her convent. She has been held in esteem within the Carmelite order and among Czech Catholics as a foundress-figure and a woman of prayer, yet she has not been beatified or canonized by the Holy See. No universal feast day or official list of patronages is attached to her name. Her historical significance lies in the transmission of the Teresian charism to the Czech lands in the Baroque period.
