Biography

Short Description

Anne-Eugénie Milleret de Brou was born on 25 August 1817 in Metz, in northeastern France, the daughter of Jacques Milleret, a banker and politician of Voltairean and largely irreligious outlook, and Marie-Eugénie de Brou, who retained a more conventional Catholic piety. The family enjoyed wealth and social standing in her early childhood, but financial collapse, political reversals, and the separation of her parents broke that security. Her mother died in 1832, leaving the adolescent Anne-Eugénie in grief and religious uncertainty. She received the education typical of her class and was intelligent and cultured, yet distant from practiced faith. A decisive conversion came in Lent of 1836, when she heard the Dominican preacher Henri-Dominique Lacordaire at Notre-Dame de Paris; the sermons reoriented her toward God and the Church and awakened a sense of vocation.

Drawn into the circle of the priest Théodore Combalot, she embraced his project of a congregation of women religious dedicated to the Christian education of girls and to the mystery of the Assumption of Mary. On 30 April 1839 she and a few companions began community life in Paris, and she took the name Marie-Eugénie de Jésus. The Religious of the Assumption received diocesan approval and later pontifical recognition. Their apostolate sought to form young women intellectually, morally, and spiritually so that they might influence society from within, joining a strong Catholic identity with serious study and an openness to contemporary culture. The sisters professed poverty, chastity, and obedience and combined contemplative life with active teaching.

The foundress governed through decades of hardship. Recurrent illness, including pulmonary disease, poverty, misunderstandings with ecclesiastical authorities, and the departure of some early members tested the community. Marie-Eugénie nevertheless established a spirituality centered on the Kingdom of God, the Eucharist, and the Assumption, and she insisted on a high standard of studies for both sisters and pupils. Houses were opened in France and then abroad, including in England and Spain, and later on other continents. She wrote numerous letters and instructions that show a practical, theologically informed mind and a concern for the interior life of her sisters as well as for the educational mission.

Marie-Eugénie de Jésus died in Paris on 10 March 1898 after nearly sixty years of religious life. Devotion to her memory grew within the congregation and beyond. The cause of beatification advanced in the twentieth century; Pope Paul VI beatified her on 9 February 1975. Pope John Paul II canonized her on 3 June 2007 in Saint Peter's Square. The Church commemorates her on 10 March. The Religious of the Assumption remain an international congregation engaged in education and other apostolates, continuing the work she began in nineteenth-century France.
