Biography

Short Description

Marie-Josephte Fitzbach was born on 16 October 1806 in the parish of Saint-Vallier, in the British colony of Lower Canada (present-day Quebec). She was the daughter of Charles Fitzbach, a carpenter who had come from Luxembourg, and Geneviève Nadeau. The family lived in modest circumstances, and she received little formal education. In her early teens she left the countryside for Quebec City, where she entered domestic service and spent her youth working in private households, a common path for girls of limited means in early nineteenth-century Canadian society.

On 17 April 1828 she married François-Xavier Roy, a merchant of Quebec City. The couple had three children, all of whom died in childhood. Roy himself died in 1833, leaving Fitzbach a widow while still in her twenties. She then took employment as housekeeper in the household of Elzéar Bédard, a lawyer, judge, and political figure, and remained in that position for many years. Her life in this period was quiet, industrious, and rooted in the Catholic practice of the city.

In the late 1840s Fitzbach became deeply concerned with the condition of women confined in the Quebec City prison and of those who, upon release, had no safe place to go. With the encouragement of Archbishop Pierre-Flavien Turgeon of Quebec, she opened a refuge on 11 January 1850. The house, known as the Asile Sainte-Madeleine, received women leaving jail and others in moral or material distress. Companions soon joined her, and the small community adopted a shared religious rule of life. This work developed into a diocesan congregation dedicated to the rehabilitation of women and the protection of girls, in the tradition of Catholic refuges associated with Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd.

Fitzbach took the religious name Marie du Sacré-Cœur (Mary of the Sacred Heart) and became the first superior of what became the Congregation of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd of Quebec (Sœurs du Bon-Pasteur de Québec). The sisters made their first religious profession in 1856. Under her leadership the community devoted itself to works of mercy among women and girls in difficulty, establishing houses and expanding its apostolate in Quebec during the second half of the nineteenth century. She governed the congregation as mother superior for many years as it took on a stable institutional form within the Catholic Church in Canada.

Marie-Josephte Fitzbach died in Quebec City on 1 September 1885. The congregation she founded continued after her death as an active apostolic institute. She has not been beatified or canonized, and no official feast day or list of patronages is attached to her name in the universal calendar of the Catholic Church. Her historical importance rests on her role as a widow-foundress who organized a lasting work of charity for marginalized women in nineteenth-century Quebec.
