Biography

Short Description

Marie-Rosalie Cadron-Jetté was born on 27 January 1794 in Lavaltrie, in Lower Canada, the daughter of Antoine Cadron and Marie-Rosalie Roy. She was raised in a Catholic farming household along the St. Lawrence River and received little formal schooling. In 1811, at the age of seventeen, she married Jean-Marie Jetté. The couple lived first in the Lavaltrie region and later in Montreal. They had eleven children, several of whom died in infancy or childhood. In 1832, during the cholera epidemic that struck Montreal, Jean-Marie Jetté died, leaving Cadron-Jetté a widow with surviving children still dependent on her.

In the years after her husband's death she supported her family and became known for practical charity. Mid-nineteenth-century Montreal offered almost no protection to unmarried women who became pregnant; they were commonly cast out by their families and denied respectable work. At the urging of Ignace Bourget, Bishop of Montreal, Cadron-Jetté began in the mid-1840s to receive such women into her own house. She gave them shelter, care in childbirth, and as much discretion as circumstances allowed, seeking to preserve the lives of both mother and child. The work was controversial in the social and religious climate of Catholic Quebec, where illegitimacy carried a heavy public stigma and her hospitality could be read as condoning sin.

In 1848 Cadron-Jetté and a small group of companions founded the Institute of the Sisters of Misericorde, a religious congregation devoted to unwed mothers and their infants. She took the religious name Marie of the Nativity and served as the community's first superior. The sisters combined contemplative religious life with the skilled work of midwives and nurses. They opened the Hospice de la Miséricorde in Montreal and, over time, accepted related works of mercy, including hospital care. Poverty, public misunderstanding, and the emotional burden of their apostolate marked the institute's early years. Cadron-Jetté formed the sisters in a spirituality of mercy directed toward people whom respectable society rejected.

She died in Montreal on 5 April 1864. The congregation she founded survived and later established houses elsewhere in Canada and in the United States, remaining associated with the care of mothers and children in distress. Her reputation for holiness was preserved among the sisters and those they served. A cause for beatification was introduced in the twentieth century. Pope John Paul II declared her Venerable in 1994, recognizing her heroic virtue. After approval of a miracle attributed to her intercession, she was beatified on 31 May 2013 in Montreal by Cardinal Angelo Amato, acting in the name of Pope Francis. The Church commemorates her on 5 April.
