Biography

Short Description

Marie Staszewska, known in religion as Maria Klemensa Staszewska and born Helena Emilia Staszewska, was a Polish Ursuline nun and one of the Catholic martyrs of the Second World War. She was born on 30 July 1890 in Poznań, then situated in the Prussian Partition of Polish lands under the German Empire. She grew up in an era of official Germanization policies that sought to suppress Polish language, culture, and Catholic institutional life. After Poland regained independence in 1918, she entered the Congregation of the Ursuline Sisters of the Roman Union, a teaching order following the charism of Saint Angela Merici and dedicated especially to the education of girls. She took the religious name Maria Klemensa and lived the common life of prayer, community, and pedagogical work in Ursuline houses in interwar Poland.

As a teaching sister she belonged to a generation of Polish religious women who helped rebuild Catholic education in the Second Polish Republic. Widely available historical sources do not preserve a rich archive of her individual assignments, classrooms, or writings; she was not a public figure before her death, and later interest in her life arose chiefly from her martyrdom. Like other Ursulines of her time she would have combined classroom instruction with the liturgical and community observances of her congregation. The German invasion of September 1939 and the subsequent occupation shattered that world. Nazi policy in occupied Poland deliberately targeted the clergy, religious, and intelligentsia as bearers of Polish national and Catholic identity. Convents were closed or confiscated, and many sisters were arrested, imprisoned, or deported.

Sister Maria Klemensa was among those seized by the German authorities. She was sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp (Auschwitz-Birkenau) in occupied southern Poland, the principal complex of Nazi labor and extermination camps. There she endured starvation, disease, forced labor, and the systematic brutality of the camp regime. She died on 27 July 1943, three days before her fifty-third birthday. The Catholic Church regards her death as martyrdom in odium fidei, because the persecution of Polish religious was inseparable from the occupier’s assault on the Christian faith and on the Polish nation as a Catholic people. Individual details of her arrest, transports, and last weeks remain sparsely documented compared with better-known priest-martyrs of the same period.

After 1945 the Polish Church kept the memory of clergy and religious killed under Nazi occupation. In the 1990s a large cause was prepared grouping 108 of these victims. On 13 June 1999, during a Mass in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified them together; Maria Klemensa Staszewska was included in that number. Their collective liturgical memorial is 12 June. She has not been canonized. Her life, so far as the sources allow us to know it, illustrates the ordinary fidelity of consecrated teaching sisters in the first half of the twentieth century and the price exacted for that fidelity under totalitarian persecution. She remains one of the less individually documented members of the 108, yet her beatification records the Church’s judgment that her death was a witness of faith.
