Biography
Marin Shkurti was an Albanian Roman Catholic priest of the Latin rite who died as a martyr during the communist persecution of religion in mid-twentieth-century Albania. He was born in 1933 in Shkrel, in the highlands of Malësia e Madhe in northern Albania, a region with a longstanding Catholic population centered on the archdiocese of Shkodër. He pursued priestly formation in that environment at a time when the postwar communist government was already restricting the Church, seizing property, and imprisoning clergy. Surviving public accounts of his early life are limited, as church archives and parish records were widely destroyed or suppressed under the regime.
He was ordained a priest in 1961. His ministry took place in the years when Enver Hoxha’s government moved from harassment of religion toward its total legal suppression. In 1967 Albania was proclaimed an atheist state and public religious practice was forbidden; churches were closed or demolished and remaining clergy who continued to serve did so in secret. Shkurti persisted in clandestine pastoral work among the faithful, celebrating the sacraments despite the certainty of punishment if discovered.
He was arrested by the communist security police. Like other Albanian clergy of that period he was subjected to interrogation and mistreatment. He was put to death in 1969. Precise details of the place of execution and of burial are not consistently recorded in publicly available sources; the authorities often concealed the graves of those they executed for religious activity.
Together with thirty-seven other bishops, priests, religious, and lay Catholics killed for the faith between 1945 and 1974, Marin Shkurti was beatified on 5 November 2016 in Shkodër. The beatification was celebrated in the name of Pope Francis. The group is known as the Blessed Martyrs of Albania (Blessed Vincent Prennushi and Companions) and is commemorated on 5 November. Shkurti has not been canonized. Individual patronages attached specifically to him are not established in standard hagiographical lists; he is honored as one of the witnesses of the Catholic Church in Albania during the twentieth-century persecution.
