Biography

Short Description

Marina de Escobar was a Spanish Catholic mystic of the Counter-Reformation, born at Valladolid on 8 February 1554 and died in the same city on 9 June 1633. She came from a pious and comparatively wealthy family and was educated by the Augustinian nuns of Valladolid. From childhood she suffered from fragile health. Around the age of seventeen she sought to enter the Augustinian convent that had formed her, but illness made a regular monastic life impossible. She therefore remained in her father’s household, bound herself by a private vow of chastity, and adopted a severe personal rule of prayer, fasting, and penance while living in the world rather than behind the grille of a cloister.

In 1587 she placed herself under the spiritual direction of the Jesuit Luis de la Puente (also known as Luis de Ponte), a prominent ascetical theologian of Golden Age Spain, who guided her until his death in 1624. Under his supervision she became known in Valladolid for a life of intense interior prayer. Accounts compiled by de la Puente describe frequent ecstasies, visions of Christ, the Virgin Mary, and the saints, together with prolonged episodes of what her contemporaries understood as diabolical assault. Her spirituality was firmly sacramental and was exercised under close Jesuit direction, in keeping with the caution of the Spanish Church after the Council of Trent toward unsupervised female visionaries.

Among the revelations attributed to her were communications associated with Saint Bridget of Sweden. These inspired Marina to work for the establishment in Spain of the Order of the Most Holy Saviour (the Bridgettines) under a stricter, recollect observance. She prepared constitutions and gathered ecclesiastical and lay support, yet she never herself took solemn vows in a monastery and remained a laywoman. The first Spanish Bridgettine convent, at Valladolid, was opened only in 1637, four years after her death, so that she is remembered as foundress in intention and planning rather than as a professed religious.

Marina de Escobar died in Valladolid on 9 June 1633. The principal source for her life is the extensive biography and collection of revelations assembled by Luis de la Puente and later published as the Vida maravillosa de la Venerable Virgen Doña Marina de Escobar. Older Catholic literature often styles her “Venerable,” but she has not been beatified or canonized by the Holy See, and she has no universal liturgical feast or officially assigned patronages. Her historical significance rests on the unusually well-documented record of a laywoman’s mystical life in Golden Age Castile and on the subsequent foundation of the Spanish Bridgettine Recollects that her project made possible.
