Biography

Short Description

Marina the Monk, also called Saint Marina of Bithynia, Marinos, and Marina the Ascetic, is a Christian saint commemorated in the Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Coptic, Maronite, and Roman Catholic traditions. Almost everything reported of her comes from a Greek hagiographical life of uncertain date, later translated and adapted in Syriac, Coptic, Arabic, and other languages of the Christian East. That narrative situates her in Bithynia in Asia Minor, in the Eastern Roman or early Byzantine world. Proposed chronological settings in secondary literature commonly fall in the fifth century or the eighth century, but these are conventional guesses rather than dates anchored in contemporary documents. No independent historical record confirms her existence, and modern scholars generally regard the story as legendary, or at least as a pious tale that cannot be verified as biography. It belongs to a recognizable late antique group of lives in which a woman conceals her sex in a male monastery.

According to the vita, Marina was the daughter of a Christian father named Eugenius. After her mother’s death, Eugenius decided to enter monastic life and intended to leave his daughter behind. Marina would not be parted from him. She cut her hair, put on men’s clothing, and presented herself as a male, taking the name Marinos. The abbot of a monastery in Bithynia received father and child, taking Marinos for a son or a eunuch. They lived under the monastic rule until Eugenius died. Marinos remained in the community and was known for fasting, silence, and obedience. In the course of an errand outside the monastery, Marinos and companions lodged at an inn. The innkeeper’s daughter became pregnant by a soldier and, when the pregnancy was discovered, named Marinos as the father. Summoned by the abbot, Marinos did not disclose that she was a woman. She accepted the accusation, was beaten, and was expelled from the monastery.

Living as a beggar at the monastery gate, Marinos received the infant when it was born and raised the child in poverty and penance for a number of years, often given as three or more in the various recensions. The monks at length relented and readmitted Marinos, together with the child, to the lowest place in the house, imposing extra labour and humiliation. Marinos continued in this state until her death. When the brethren prepared the body for burial they discovered that the monk they had punished as a seducer was a woman. The community was filled with fear and remorse. In some versions the true father of the child, or the innkeeper’s daughter, subsequently confessed, and the monks sought to honour the saint whom they had wronged.

The story was widely copied because it illustrated patience under calumny, the hiding of virtue, and the possibility that holiness might be unrecognized even in a monastery. It also served as an extreme model of ascetic humility. A parallel Lebanese, especially Maronite, tradition identifies Marina with the Qadisha Valley and with Qalamoun, and associates her relics or cult with the Monastery of Qannoubine; that localization does not match the Bithynian setting of the Greek life and should be treated as a separate or later claim rather than as a verified historical domicile. Because the saint belongs to the era of popular and liturgical recognition rather than to the later juridical processes of the Roman Congregation of Rites, there is no historically documented act of papal canonization or beatification by a named pontiff.

Her principal commemorations are 12 February in much of the Eastern Orthodox calendar, 18 June in the Roman Martyrology, and 15 Mesra in the Coptic Synaxarium; some Orthodox and Eastern calendars also note other days, including in July. She is not securely attested as the formal patron of particular places, professions, or causes in the way that some better-documented saints are, and she should not be confused with Marina or Margaret of Antioch, a distinct martyr of an earlier period. Precise years of birth and death, a named native city, and a historically confirmed grave remain unknown.
