Biography

Short Description

Marinus of Caesarea was a third-century Christian martyr known almost entirely from the account given by Eusebius of Caesarea in Book VII of the Ecclesiastical History. He was a Roman soldier of distinguished rank stationed at Caesarea Maritima in the province of Syria Palaestina. The events took place in the early 260s, after the emperor Valerian had been captured by the Persians and Gallienus had granted the churches a measure of official peace. Even in that interval the older requirement that men holding or seeking military office sacrifice to the emperors could still be enforced by local magistrates.

When Marinus was on the point of being promoted to centurion, a rival candidate denounced him as a Christian who could not lawfully occupy the post because he would not sacrifice. The case came before the judge Achaeus. Marinus confessed that he was a Christian. Achaeus allowed him three hours to reconsider. During that pause Theotecnus, bishop of Caesarea, took him into the church, set a sword on one side and the book of the Gospels on the other, and asked him to choose. Marinus at once stretched out his hand and took the Gospels. The bishop exhorted him to hold fast to God. Recalled to the tribunal, Marinus repeated his confession, was led out, and was beheaded.

A Roman senator named Astyrius (Asterius), a Christian of high rank who was present, took up the body, wrapped it in a splendid and costly garment, and gave it an honorable burial. Eusebius, later bishop of the same city, presents the story as a local tradition of his own church. In the Roman Martyrology Marinus is commemorated together with Asterius on 3 March. Later notices sometimes associate Asterius with a further episode at Caesarea Philippi, but that material does not add reliable detail about Marinus himself.

Nothing historically secure is known of Marinus’s birth, family, earlier career, or the precise spot of his grave. He was neither cleric nor monk, but a soldier whose public refusal to sacrifice cost him promotion and life. Historians value the episode as evidence that Christians served in the Roman army in the mid-third century and that local bishops could still support confessors even when imperial policy was relatively mild. Beyond Eusebius and the liturgical commemoration, later legendary expansions are not well founded.
