Biography
Mario Hiriart Pulido was born on 23 July 1931 in Santiago, Chile. He grew up in a Catholic family in the Chilean capital during the mid-twentieth century and received his professional education at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, where he trained as a civil engineer. In the course of his university years he encountered the Schoenstatt Apostolic Movement, the Marian movement of spiritual renewal founded in Germany by Father Joseph Kentenich. Schoenstatt’s covenant of love with the Mother Thrice Admirable, its emphasis on education in faith, and its ideal of sanctifying ordinary professional life made a lasting impression on him and oriented the rest of his short life.
Hiriart entered the Secular Institute of the Brothers of Mary of Schoenstatt, a community of consecrated men who profess the evangelical counsels while remaining in secular occupations. As a consecrated layman rather than a priest, he sought to unite engineering work with a hidden life of prayer, apostolic availability, and fidelity to Schoenstatt spirituality. Those who knew him recalled a combination of technical seriousness, personal simplicity, cheerfulness, and a deep Marian piety centered on the shrine and the covenant of love. Letters and personal notes later used in his cause of beatification document an interior life ordered toward everyday holiness rather than withdrawal from the world.
In the early 1960s he was diagnosed with cancer and traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in the United States, where Schoenstatt communities were already present and where he could receive specialized medical care. He continued to accept his illness in a spirit of faith. He died in Milwaukee on 15 July 1964, a few days before his thirty-third birthday. His early death, the testimony of those who had lived and worked with him in Chile, and the reputation of holiness that surrounded him led the Church in Chile to introduce a cause for beatification.
The diocesan inquiry gathered documentation on his life, virtues, and writings. On 21 December 2020 Pope Francis authorized the decree recognizing that Mario Hiriart Pulido had practiced the theological and cardinal virtues to a heroic degree, thereby declaring him Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized. No liturgical feast day has been universally assigned by the Holy See, nor has he been proclaimed patron of any particular place, profession, or cause. His memory is cultivated especially within the Schoenstatt family in Chile and internationally, where he is presented as a model of lay consecration and of fidelity in suffering.
