Biography

Short Description

Marius, Martha, Audifax, and Abachum are a family of Christian martyrs commemorated together in the Roman Martyrology on 19 January. The traditional Latin Acts and later Western liturgical sources present them as Persians of noble rank who travelled to Rome in the reign of the emperor Claudius II Gothicus, in the later 260s. Marius (also called Maris) was the husband of Martha; Audifax and Abachum (also written Abacum or Habacuc) were their sons. They are said to have come in order to pray at the tombs of the Apostles and to assist Christians then under persecution. This family story was long accepted in Catholic hagiography, but modern critical study treats the surviving Acts as a late and largely conventional composition. The Roman cult of martyrs bearing these names is better attested than the biographical particulars, including the Persian origin, which cannot be confirmed from contemporary evidence.

According to the legend, after reaching Rome the family distributed their wealth to the poor and devoted themselves to visiting imprisoned Christians and to burying the bodies of those executed for the faith. Burial of martyrs is a recurrent theme in Roman passion literature and was itself dangerous under imperial measures against honouring the condemned. In due course they were arrested. The Acts describe a familiar sequence of interrogation and torture: refusal to sacrifice to the pagan gods was followed by beating, the rack, fire, and tearing with iron instruments. Such details belong to the stock language of late antique martyr acts and should not be read as an independent historical report of their trial.

The place of execution is given as the Via Cornelia, some thirteen miles from Rome. In the traditional account Marius and the two sons were beheaded, while Martha was put to death separately, by drowning at a site called Nymphae according to some recensions. The year commonly assigned is 270, coinciding with the close of Claudius II’s reign. A Christian woman is said to have recovered and buried the bodies in a cemetery on the same road. In the early Middle Ages relics associated with the group were moved within the city: they were formerly venerated in the church of St. Adrian in the Forum, and Pope Paschal I (817–824) is recorded as having translated remains identified as those of Martha, Audifax, and Abachum to the church of Santa Prassede on the Esquiline.

They were never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; their cult belongs to the ancient veneration of Roman martyrs. The Roman Martyrology on 19 January commemorates them as noble Persians who suffered on the Via Cornelia after many torments, the father and sons by the sword and Martha by drowning. In the calendar reform of 1969 their feast was removed from the General Roman Calendar because the cult was not of universal importance, but they remain in the Martyrology. Historians following the Bollandist tradition conclude that while martyrs of these names were probably honoured in Rome from late antiquity, the family relationships, the journey from Persia, and the picturesque details of the passion cannot be verified and should be treated as hagiographical tradition rather than as established biography.
