Biography

Short Description

Mark Barkworth, also known by the alias Lambert, was an English Catholic priest and martyr born about 1572 at Searby in Lincolnshire. He grew up in Protestant England during the reign of Elizabeth I, when the practice of Roman Catholicism was severely restricted by penal legislation. Sources of the period indicate that he received a university education, commonly associated with Oxford, before converting to the Catholic Church as a young man. That conversion led him to leave England for the Continent in order to train for the priesthood, a path that English law treated as treasonable once he returned as an ordained missionary.

In 1593 he entered the English College at Douai, then a principal seminary for English recusants in the Spanish Netherlands. He subsequently studied at the English College in Valladolid in Spain. He was ordained priest in 1599 and dispatched to the English mission the same year. After a short period of clandestine ministry he was arrested, imprisoned in London, and condemned to death for his priesthood. During his captivity, or in connection with his time in Spain, he was aggregated to the Order of Saint Benedict; English Benedictine tradition has long honoured him as the first martyr of the restored English congregation, and he is frequently designated a Benedictine.

On 27 February 1601 Barkworth was executed at Tyburn, then lying to the west of the City of London. He was hanged, drawn, and quartered, the statutory penalty for high treason. The Jesuit Roger Filcock suffered with him, and the widow Anne Line, later canonized, was hanged the same day for harbouring priests. Martyrological accounts state that Barkworth went to the gallows in a Benedictine habit and that he publicly attributed his death to his Catholic faith rather than to political conspiracy. Because of the manner of execution, no verified place of burial for his remains is known.

Pope Pius XI beatified Mark Barkworth on 15 December 1929 among a large cohort of English and Welsh martyrs of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. He has not been canonized and remains styled Blessed. His individual liturgical commemoration falls on 27 February, the date of his death; in England he is also remembered with other Reformation-era martyrs. Surviving evidence for his life is sparse and consists chiefly of seminary records, government examinations, and later Catholic martyrologies; an exact date of birth and many personal particulars have not been preserved in reliable sources.
