Biography

Short Description

Marco d'Aviano was born Carlo Domenico Cristofori in 1631 at Aviano in Friuli, then part of the Republic of Venice. Standard biographies name his parents as Marco Cristofori and Rosa Zanoni. The town lay in a Catholic Venetian frontier region, and his early life belongs to that setting. As an adolescent he is reported to have set out toward military service against the Ottomans and then to have turned instead to religion. In 1648 he entered the Capuchin novitiate at Conegliano and took the name Marco. The Capuchins, a strict Franciscan reform, stressed poverty, popular missions, and preaching to ordinary people. He made profession in that order and was ordained a priest in the 1650s, after which he was used in the typical Capuchin work of itinerant preaching through the towns and countryside of northern Italy.

In the 1660s and 1670s his name as a mission preacher spread. Capuchin and later Catholic accounts describe large crowds, missions lasting many days, and a plain, forceful style of exhortation. He was not a bishop and held no high curial rank; his standing was that of a friar-preacher. The pontificate of Innocent XI, who treated Ottoman pressure on Central Europe as a principal danger, widened Marco's field. He was sent north of the Alps, entered the circle of Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I, and became a familiar spiritual counsellor at the imperial court and in the army's camps. He urged Catholic princes toward a common effort, speaking of a Holy League and presenting the war as a defense of Christendom as well as of the Habsburg lands.

The siege of Vienna in 1683 made him famous beyond the cloister. Ottoman forces under Kara Mustafa Pasha invested the Habsburg capital. A relieving army gathered from imperial troops, the Poles of King John III Sobieski, and German contingents, with Charles of Lorraine among the commanders. Marco accompanied that coalition, preached to the soldiers, and celebrated Mass in the days around the decisive action. Catholic contemporaries credited him with helping to hold a fractious alliance together and to sustain morale; later devotion added miracles and prophetic foresight, which belong to hagiographical tradition rather than to strictly controlled evidence. The siege was broken on 12 September 1683. In the following years he remained attached to the imperial war in Hungary during the Great Turkish War, in the milieu of the operations that recovered Buda in 1686 and continued against Ottoman positions in the region. A later Viennese legend tied leftover Ottoman coffee, the brown Capuchin habit, and the drink called Kapuziner or cappuccino to his memory; historians treat that story as folklore.

He never left the Capuchin order, never married, and held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see. He died in Vienna in 1699 and was buried in the Capuchin Church there, the church also associated with the imperial crypt. Veneration persisted in Vienna and in his native Friuli. A modern cause of beatification was introduced, and Pope John Paul II beatified him on 27 April 2003. The Catholic Church commemorates him as Blessed Marco d'Aviano on 13 August, the anniversary of his death. He has not been canonized. His historical importance lies in the meeting of Capuchin popular preaching with papal and Habsburg policy in the Ottoman wars of the late seventeenth century, and in the lasting memory of the relief of Vienna.
