Biography

Short Description

Markward von Prüm, whose name also appears in Latin sources as Marquardus or Marcuardus Prumiensis, was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the imperial abbey of Prüm in the Eifel, in the Carolingian Middle Kingdom, corresponding to present-day Rhineland-Palatinate in Germany. He held the abbacy from about 829 until 853. Prüm Abbey had been founded in 721 by Bertrada the Elder, and by the ninth century it ranked among the great Reichsabteien of the Frankish world, closely bound to the Carolingian dynasty through land grants, royal visits, and the presence of important relics, including the so-called Holy Sandals of Christ. No contemporary source records Markward’s date or place of birth, nor the names of his parents; as was usual for men appointed to such houses, he is likely to have belonged to the Frankish aristocracy, but that inference is not documented.

His years as abbot coincided with the last phase of the reign of Louis the Pious and with the civil wars among Louis’s sons that followed the emperor’s death in 840. After the partition of the empire at Verdun in 843, Prüm lay in the portion assigned to Emperor Lothair I. Lothair’s attachment to the monastery was strong: he would later lay aside the crown, take the monastic habit at Prüm, and die there in 855. Under Markward the abbey continued to enjoy imperial protection and to serve as a place of prayer, hospitality, and political significance. Charters of the period confirm the house’s extensive estates in the Eifel, the Moselle region, and beyond.

The most fully attested event of Markward’s abbacy is his journey to Rome in 844. In that year, with the approval of Pope Sergius II, he obtained the relics of the Roman martyrs Saints Chrysanthus and Daria and had them translated to the Benedictine community at Münstereifel, a dependent house of Prüm. Medieval accounts of this translatio underline both the prestige of Prüm in papal eyes and the ninth-century custom of enriching northern monasteries with Roman sacred remains. The cult of Chrysanthus and Daria thereafter became established in the Rhineland, and Münstereifel developed as a religious center under Prüm’s oversight.

Markward died in 853, in all probability at Prüm itself. He was not the subject of a surviving contemporary vita, and he does not appear to have received formal beatification or canonization; unlike his later successor Saint Ansbald of Prüm, he has no established feast day in the Roman Martyrology. Knowledge of his life rests on monastic charters, the record of the 844 translation, and later historiography of Prüm Abbey rather than on hagiographical legend. He remains an important figure in the ninth-century history of one of the principal abbeys of Lotharingia.
