Biography
Marta Anna Wiecka was born on 12 January 1874 in the village of Nowy Wiec in Pomerania, then part of the German Empire, into a Polish Roman Catholic farming family. She was one of thirteen children of Paweł Wiecki and Paulina (née Kamrowska). The household was shaped by regular prayer, the sacraments, and the hard conditions of rural life under Prussian administration. She received a simple village schooling and was remembered from youth for piety and for a practical concern for the poor and the sick. After her First Communion she formed a firm intention of entering religious life, despite the difficulties that Prussian policy and the aftermath of the Kulturkampf placed in the way of Polish girls seeking the convent in her native region.
Unable to enter a community in Prussian territory as she had first hoped, she went to Kraków in Austrian Galicia and there joined the Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul in the early 1890s. After postulancy and reception of the habit she was assigned to the congregation’s hospital works. Over the following years she served as a nurse in Lwów (Lviv), in Podhajce, in Bochnia, and finally in Sniatyn in eastern Galicia. Those who knew her described a sister of steady competence and gentleness toward patients of every condition, including the poorest and those with contagious illness, in the Vincentian spirit of serving Christ in the abandoned.
In the spring of 1904 at the hospital in Sniatyn a lay attendant was ordered to disinfect a room after a patient had died of an infectious fever. The man, who had a family dependent on him, feared contagion. Sister Marta volunteered to do the work in his place. She contracted the same fever, identified in the sources as typhus, and died on 30 May 1904 at the age of thirty. She was buried in Sniatyn. A popular reputation for holiness gathered quickly around her memory among Polish and Ukrainian Catholics of the region, and reported favors began to be associated with her grave.
The cause of beatification was later introduced and carried to Rome. Pope John Paul II recognized her heroic virtues and declared her Venerable on 20 December 2004. After approval of a miracle attributed to her intercession, she was beatified on 24 May 2008 in Lviv, Ukraine, at a celebration presided over by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone as legate of Pope Benedict XVI. Her liturgical memorial is 30 May. She has not been canonized. Blessed Marta Wiecka is remembered as a hospital sister who gave her life in the ordinary duties of nursing; her cult is centered in Poland and in western Ukraine.
