Biography

Short Description

Aimée-Adèle Le Bouteiller, known in religion as Sister Martha (French: Sœur Marthe; also Marta), was born on 2 December 1816 in the village of Percy in the Manche department of Normandy, in northwestern France. She belonged to a modest rural family of the Norman countryside in the generation that grew up after the French Revolution and the Napoleonic wars, when Catholic life was being restored in the villages of the Cotentin. Like many peasant girls of her time she received little formal schooling and was formed mainly by parish life, household labor, and farm work. After the hardships of a poor childhood she earned her living in domestic service before seeking admission to religious life.

In 1841 she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of the Christian Schools of Mercy (Sœurs des Écoles Chrétiennes de la Miséricorde) at its motherhouse in Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte, the community founded earlier in the century by Julie Postel, better known as Saint Marie-Madeleine Postel. She received the name Martha and lived as a lay sister rather than a choir sister, which meant a life of manual work rather than teaching or administration. For more than forty years she served in the kitchen, garden, laundry, and as portress. She thus knew the foundress in the last years of Postel’s life (Postel died in 1846) and then continued under the same roof through the mid-nineteenth century, remaining in the hidden round of convent labor that characterized many unlettered sisters of teaching congregations.

Those who later testified to her reputation described a woman of marked humility, obedience, and interior prayer, with a strong Eucharistic piety and devotion to the Virgin Mary. She was not a foundress, mystic of published writings, or public missionary; her holiness was presented as fidelity in ordinary tasks. During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870–1871, when German troops occupied parts of Normandy, she was remembered for composure and practical charity amid the disruption of convent and village life. In her last years her health failed while she was still at Saint-Sauveur-le-Vicomte. She died there on 18 March 1883.

A local cult and the congregation’s memory of her virtue led to a cause for beatification. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 4 November 1990. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 18 March, the anniversary of her death. She remains a relatively little-known blessed of nineteenth-century French religious life, invoked as an example of humble conventual labor rather than as the patron of a widely documented list of places or causes.
