Biography

Short Description

Martha Kim Sŏng-im (김성임 마르타) was a Korean Catholic laywoman and martyr of the nineteenth century, counted among the 103 Martyr Saints of Korea. She was born in 1787 at Myeoncheon (also written Myonchon or Myŏnch'ŏn) in Chungcheong Province, in the Kingdom of Joseon. She came from a non-Christian household and entered marriage in the ordinary social pattern of her time and place. Her husband died, and she lived thereafter as a widow. Catholic biographical tradition, which draws on community memory and on material related to the government interrogations of 1839, describes her before conversion as a woman of harsh or quarrelsome temper, a detail repeated across later hagiographical compilations of the Korean martyrs.

Catholicism had taken root in Korea from the late eighteenth century largely through lay study and household transmission, often without resident clergy for long stretches, and it remained legally prohibited. In middle age, around her fiftieth year, Kim encountered Catholic teaching and received baptism, taking the Christian name Martha. Accounts of her life state that after baptism her conduct changed markedly: she became gentle, patient, and attentive to prayer and the hidden practices of the faith. Korean Catholics of this period gathered in secret, rejected participation in state-mandated ancestral rites that the Church then judged incompatible with Christian worship, and lived under the constant possibility of denunciation. As a widow she belonged to the large group of laywomen who formed a substantial part of the early Korean Catholic community.

The Gihae persecution of 1839 was among the most severe of the Joseon anti-Catholic campaigns. It followed official discovery of Catholic networks and of French missionaries of the Paris Foreign Missions Society, and it unfolded under King Heonjong. Martha Kim was arrested, questioned, and tortured in an effort to obtain apostasy. She refused to recant. In 1839 she was executed by beheading in Seoul, at or near the Small West Gate (Seosomun), a customary site of public capital punishment. She was in her early fifties. Her death belongs to the same wave of executions that claimed many other laywomen and laymen whose names were later joined in the Korean martyrology. Precise reconstruction of every interrogation and of the exact calendar day of each beheading depends on surviving court records and on Church lists that are not always identical in secondary summaries; the year, place, manner of death, and her identity as a baptized widow who would not deny the faith are the elements consistently attested.

She was among the seventy-nine Korean martyrs beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. On 6 May 1984, in Seoul, Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and 101 companions, including Martha Kim Sŏng-im, as the 103 Martyr Saints of Korea. Their collective liturgical feast is kept on 20 September. She is venerated as a lay widow and martyr of the Korean Church. Standard directories do not attach to her name a separate list of individual patronages distinct from the group’s place in Korean Catholic memory.
