Biography

Short Description

Martha of Bethany is a New Testament figure identified in the Gospels of Luke and John as the sister of Mary of Bethany and of Lazarus. The evangelists present her household as living in the village of Bethany, on the eastern slope of the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, in first-century Judea under Roman rule. No contemporary source records a year of birth or death, and later hagiographical dates are legendary rather than historically attested. In the Gospel of Luke (10:38–42), Jesus is received in her home. Martha is described as distracted with much serving while her sister Mary sits at the Lord’s feet; when Martha asks Jesus to bid Mary help her, he replies that Mary has chosen the better part. That scene became, in later Christian interpretation, a classic contrast between the active and the contemplative lives.

In the Gospel of John she appears in the narrative of the raising of Lazarus (John 11). After Lazarus falls ill and dies, Jesus delays his coming. Martha goes out to meet him and says that if he had been there her brother would not have died, yet she also affirms that God will grant whatever Jesus asks. In the ensuing dialogue she confesses, ‘I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, the one coming into the world,’ one of the most explicit christological confessions in the Fourth Gospel. Jesus then calls Lazarus from the tomb. Shortly afterward, in John 12, Jesus is again at table in Bethany six days before Passover: Martha serves, Lazarus reclines at table, and Mary anoints Jesus’ feet. These passages are the sole first-century witnesses to her life. Scripture does not record a husband or children, nor any monastic profession.

Beyond the New Testament, traditions about Martha diverge by region and century. Eastern Christian memory keeps her among the myrrhbearing women and commemorates her with her siblings; some Eastern accounts associate the family with Cyprus after the raising of Lazarus. In the medieval West a different legend, popularized in texts such as the Golden Legend, held that Martha, Mary Magdalene, Lazarus and companions were set adrift from Palestine and landed in southern Gaul. According to that Provençal cycle she evangelized the region of Tarascon, tamed a monstrous river creature later called the Tarasque, and died there. A church at Tarascon claimed her relics from the twelfth century onward. These Western stories are not corroborated by early sources and are treated by historians as medieval pious legend rather than recoverable biography. Place and date of death therefore remain unknown.

Liturgical veneration of Martha is ancient. In the Roman Rite her feast has long been kept on 29 July; in 2021 the memorial was formally extended to include Mary and Lazarus together on that date. Byzantine calendars commemorate Martha and Mary on 4 June and also remember the family in connection with Lazarus Saturday before Palm Sunday. Because the Gospels portray her as the one who served at table, she became a patron of cooks, housewives, domestic servants, innkeepers, waiters, laundry workers, dietitians and related occupations, as well as of localities that claimed a special link to her cult, notably Tarascon. She was never the subject of a papal canonization in the later juridical sense; her cult rests on scriptural witness and continuous liturgical tradition.

Theologically, Martha has been read both as a model of hospitality and active charity and, in the Lukan episode, as a foil to contemplative discipleship. Patristic and medieval writers, including Origen and Augustine and many later commentators, returned repeatedly to the Bethany household as an image of the Church’s two ways of life. Modern historical study can affirm only the Gospel portrait: a Jewish woman of Bethany, sister of Mary and Lazarus, who received Jesus, confessed him as Messiah, and served him at table. All further details of birth year, marriage, children, later travels, and death remain unknown.
