Biography

Short Description

Martin de Porres Velázquez was born in Lima, in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, in 1579, the illegitimate son of Juan de Porres, a Spanish hidalgo, and Ana Velázquez, a freedwoman of African descent. His father at first declined to recognize him, and Martin grew up in modest circumstances with his mother and a younger sister, Juana. As a child he was placed as an apprentice to a barber-surgeon, a trade that combined haircutting with basic medical care such as bloodletting, the dressing of wounds, and the compounding of herbal remedies. Those skills later became central to his work among the sick of Lima.

In his mid-teens he sought to join the Dominican convent of Our Lady of the Rosary in Lima. Because of his mixed ancestry and illegitimate birth he was not at first allowed to become a professed religious and entered instead as a donado, a lay helper who performed the humblest tasks of the house. He served in the kitchen, the laundry, and the infirmary. Over time his obedience, humility, and charity won the respect of the community, and in the early seventeenth century he was permitted to make profession as a Dominican lay brother. He remained a brother rather than a priest for the rest of his life, combining domestic labor with an extensive ministry of healing and almsgiving.

Martin became known throughout Lima for his care of the poor, the enslaved, and the abandoned. He tended the sick in the convent infirmary and in the city, distributed food and clothing, and helped to establish an orphanage and care for foundlings. Accounts from his own century describe him as treating Spaniards, indigenous people, and Africans without distinction. Later hagiography attributed to him numerous wonders, including miraculous healings, levitation in prayer, and bilocation. He was also remembered for a gentle rapport with animals. These reports, whatever their historical kernel, shaped his reputation for holiness already in his lifetime.

He died in Lima in 1639. Popular devotion to him grew in Peru and across the Spanish world. He was beatified by Pope Gregory XVI in 1837 and canonized by Pope John XXIII in 1962, becoming the first person of African descent from the Americas to be declared a saint by the Catholic Church. His feast day is 3 November. He is widely invoked as patron of mixed-race people, barbers and hairdressers, innkeepers, public health workers, Peru, the poor, and causes of racial harmony and social justice. His remains are venerated in the Basilica and Convent of Santo Domingo in Lima.
