Biography

Short Description

Martin Thọ was a Vietnamese Catholic layman of the nineteenth century who died as a martyr during the anti-Christian persecutions of the Nguyễn dynasty and was later numbered among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. He was born in 1787 in the village of Kẻ Bàng in Nam Định Province in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam. He earned his living as a farmer, an occupation typical of the rural Catholic communities that had taken root in the region through earlier missionary work by Jesuits and members of the Paris Foreign Missions Society. Those communities often maintained the faith across generations even when clergy were scarce.

Thọ was a married man and the father of children. He lived a simple domestic and agricultural life while remaining a practicing Catholic, receiving the sacraments and supporting the local church in an era when Vietnamese Catholicism depended heavily on lay fidelity. Under Emperor Minh Mạng, whose reign included repeated edicts against Christianity from the 1830s onward, native Catholics and remaining missionaries faced imprisonment, torture, and death for refusing to apostatize, commonly by trampling on a crucifix.

In 1840 Martin Thọ was arrested for his Christian faith. He refused to recant. After imprisonment he was condemned and executed by beheading on 8 November 1840. His martyrdom belongs to the same wave of executions that claimed other Vietnamese laypeople and clergy in that year.

He was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II together with 116 companions who had died for the faith in Vietnam between the mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries. The group, which includes bishops, priests, and lay men and women of both Vietnamese and foreign origin, is commemorated collectively on 24 November. Martin Thọ is venerated in the Catholic Church especially among Vietnamese Catholics in Vietnam and in the diaspora.
