Biography

Short Description

Saint Martina was a Christian virgin and martyr associated with the city of Rome. Although the written accounts of her life belong to the genre of legendary martyr acts and cannot be treated as reliable biography, the antiquity of her cult in Rome is well attested. Tradition describes her as the daughter of a Roman of consular rank who was left an orphan at an early age. She is said to have distributed her inheritance to the poor and to have lived thereafter in prayer and works of charity. No year of birth is recorded in any early source.

The Passio of Saint Martina recounts that she was arrested for her Christian faith and refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods. The narrative then follows a conventional sequence of tortures and miracles: she was scourged and lacerated, exposed to wild beasts that would not harm her, and subjected to fire from which she emerged unhurt, before finally being beheaded. The emperor responsible for her death is named inconsistently in the various recensions of the text, appearing as Alexander Severus, Maximinus, or Diocletian. Modern hagiographers therefore place her martyrdom somewhere in the third century without assigning a precise year. The stereotyped character of the acts has led scholars to regard them as largely unhistorical, even while accepting that a martyr named Martina may have been venerated in Rome from an early period.

Documentary evidence for her cult appears in the seventh century. In 625 Pope Honorius I dedicated a church to Saint Martina in the Roman Forum, near the Mamertine Prison, on a site previously occupied by the secretarium of the Senate. This church, later rededicated jointly to Saints Luke and Martina, remained the focal point of her veneration. In 1634, during rebuilding works sponsored by Cardinal Francesco Barberini, a sarcophagus containing remains identified as those of Saint Martina was discovered together with relics of other martyrs. Pope Urban VIII composed hymns for her liturgical office and actively promoted her cult. The Roman Martyrology records her feast on 30 January.

In art Saint Martina is represented as a young woman holding the palm of martyrdom, sometimes accompanied by a lion in allusion to the legendary episode of the amphitheatre, or holding a small church. Her memory has remained closely linked to Rome and to the Baroque church of Santi Luca e Martina that still stands in the Forum. Beyond this local association, no extensive list of patronages is securely documented in the historical sources.
