Biography

Short Description

The personal name Martirij (also written Martyrius, Martyrios, Martirius, or, in Slavic forms, Martiriy/Мартирий) is a Christian theophoric name derived from the Greek word for martyr. It was borne by a number of bishops, monks, and martyrs, especially in the Greek-speaking East and later in the Slavic Orthodox world. The identifier Q23658361 does not, from standard historical and hagiographical reference works that can be checked here, attach with certainty to one uniquely documented life. Precise birth and death years, places, office, and cult for this specific item are therefore left unfilled rather than supplied by conjecture.

Several historically attested churchmen share the name and must not be merged. In the fifth century a Martyrius was Patriarch of Antioch in the decades after the Council of Chalcedon and was drawn into the Christological struggles of that see, including conflict with Peter the Fuller. Another Martyrius was Patriarch of Jerusalem in the later fifth century and is associated in Palestinian monastic sources with the circle of Euthymius and with the restoration of Chalcedonian order in the Holy Land. In Constantinople the notaries Marcian and Martyrius are commemorated as martyrs of the mid-fourth century in the struggle over the see of Constantinople. None of these identifications can be verified as the subject of Q23658361 without the Wikidata record itself.

In the East Slavic tradition the name appears as Martirij or Martiriy. Russian hagiography knows, among others, Saint Martyrius of Zelenets (Martyriy Zelenetsky), a sixteenth-century monk of the Novgorod region who founded the Zelenets Trinity Monastery and is listed in the Russian Orthodox calendar. Other local bishops and monks have also used the name. Linking any one of them to Q23658361 would be guesswork. No pope of Rome or Coptic pope of Alexandria has borne this name, which is why that office can be excluded; whether this particular Martirij held a patriarchal or catholicosal see cannot be confirmed.

Because homonymous saints are routinely confused in calendars and in secondary lists, feast days, patronages, burial sites, and canonization or beatification data cannot be assigned without risk of attributing another man’s cult to the wrong person. Marriage, children, and religious-order affiliation are likewise undocumented for this identifier. Where a life is this poorly pinned down, the responsible course is to record the limits of the evidence.

Anyone seeking a full biography of the individual behind Q23658361 should consult that Wikidata item, its sitelinks, and the liturgical or diocesan sources it cites, and should keep the Antiochene, Jerusalem, Constantinopolitan, and later Russian Martyrii carefully distinct. In the absence of those statements, no further biographical detail can be verified.
