Biography

Short Description

The holy martyr Aemilian, also known as Aemilianus or Emilian, suffered at Durostorum in the Roman province of Moesia Inferior, on the south bank of the Danube at the site of present-day Silistra in Bulgaria, during the brief reign of the emperor Julian, commonly called the Apostate. Julian ruled from 361 to 363 and sought to restore traditional Roman pagan cults after the Christianizing policies of Constantine and his sons. Local officials in the Danubian provinces accordingly revived public sacrifices and festivals.

According to the surviving hagiographical accounts, Aemilian was a Christian living in Durostorum and is described in the texts as a slave or household servant of the city's governor. When preparations were made for a pagan festival, Aemilian entered a temple, smashed the idols, and overturned the altar. An innocent person was at first accused of the deed. Aemilian then came forward and declared that he alone was responsible, openly confessing himself a Christian.

He was brought before the governor, named in the passio as Capitolinus. After interrogation and corporal punishment, Aemilian refused to offer sacrifice or to recant. He was condemned to death by burning. The sentence was carried out outside the city; he was bound to a stake and burned alive. The traditional date assigned to his martyrdom is 18 July 362. Christians of Durostorum later recovered his remains and gave them burial.

Aemilian is commemorated on 18 July in the Roman Martyrology and in the calendars of the Eastern Orthodox Churches. He belongs to the relatively small number of Christians whose deaths are associated with the pagan reaction under Julian, a period that produced fewer systematic persecutions than the earlier tetrarchic era but still saw local outbreaks of violence against those who publicly defied the restored rites. Little is recorded of his earlier life, family, or precise social standing beyond the servant's status given in the legend, and no contemporary non-hagiographical documents concerning him survive. His cult is ancient and is attested in early martyrological sources connected with the lower Danube.
