Biography

Short Description

The Martyrs of Cajonos are Juan Bautista and Jacinto de los Ángeles, two Zapotec Catholic laymen from San Francisco Cajonos in the Sierra Norte of Oaxaca, in the colonial Viceroyalty of New Spain. In the seventeenth century the Dominican Order held the main missionary charge in this mountain region, whose indigenous communities had been baptized but often continued older ceremonial practices in private. The two men served as fiscales, a colonial office filled by indigenous householders who assisted the friars in catechesis, church life, and the reporting of rites the missionaries classified as idolatry. Both were married laymen, formed in the Catholic faith, and regarded by the Dominicans as reliable collaborators rather than members of a religious order.

In September 1700, around the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, Juan Bautista and Jacinto de los Ángeles learned that townspeople were conducting a clandestine Zapotec ritual involving offerings and traditional deities. They informed the Dominican missionaries, who confiscated ritual objects and detained some participants. Many in the Cajonos towns treated the denunciation as a betrayal of communal custom. On 15 September a large crowd from San Francisco Cajonos, San Pedro Cajonos, and nearby settlements surrounded the mission, demanding the prisoners and the surrender of the two fiscales.

Under threat of a general attack, the two men were handed over. Contemporary Dominican accounts state that they were stripped, beaten, and publicly humiliated, and that they would not renounce their Christian profession or recant the report. They were taken from San Francisco Cajonos toward San Pedro Cajonos and killed on 16 September 1700. Descriptions of the killing include beating and stabbing; later narratives add that the bodies were cast into a ravine or pit. The Church has judged that they died in odium fidei, for upholding the faith by denouncing the ritual and refusing to abandon Catholicism.

Their remains were later recovered and given ecclesiastical burial. Memory of the two fiscales was kept in Dominican and diocesan tradition in Oaxaca. After historical investigation, Pope John Paul II beatified Juan Bautista and Jacinto de los Ángeles on 1 August 2002 in Mexico City during an apostolic visit, presenting them as indigenous lay witnesses and the first beatified martyrs of the Zapotec people. They have not been canonized. Their feast is kept on 18 September. They remain significant in the Catholic history of Oaxaca as examples of indigenous lay fidelity within colonial Christianity, even as historians note that the 1700 crisis belonged to a wider pattern of tension between missionary discipline and native religious persistence in the Sierra Norte.
