Biography

Short Description

The Martyrs of Košice, known in Slovak as Košickí mučeníci, in Hungarian as kassai vértanúk, and in Croatian as Košički mučenici, were three Catholic priests put to death in Košice on 7 September 1619. The city, then commonly called Kassa, belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary in Upper Hungary and today lies in Slovakia. The three men were Marko Stjepan Krizin (also called Marko Križevčanin or Márk Kőrösi), a Croatian diocesan priest and canon of the metropolitan chapter of Esztergom; Melchior Grodziecki (Melichar Grodecký), a Jesuit of Silesian Polish origin; and István Pongrácz (Štefan Pongrác), a Jesuit of Hungarian Transylvanian origin. Their deaths took place during the invasion of Royal Hungary by Gábor Bethlen, the Calvinist prince of Transylvania, at the opening of the Thirty Years' War, when anti-Habsburg politics and confessional conflict overlapped in a kingdom already divided among Habsburg Royal Hungary, Ottoman occupation, and Protestant Transylvania.

Krizin was born in the late sixteenth century at Križevci in Croatia, studied in Vienna and at the German-Hungarian College in Rome, was ordained, and obtained doctorates in philosophy and theology. As a canon of Esztergom he was sent to Upper Hungary to administer Catholic property and to support the Catholic minority in and around Košice. Grodziecki was born in the early 1580s into a noble family at Cieszyn (Teschen) in Silesia, entered the Society of Jesus at Brno in 1603, and after formation and ordination served in Bohemia before assignment to the Jesuit residence in Košice. Pongrácz was born around the same years at Alvinc (now Vințu de Jos) in Transylvania to a Hungarian noble family, entered the Jesuits in 1602, studied in the Austrian and Italian provinces of the order, and was likewise sent to Košice. By 1619 the three were living and working in the city, two as Jesuits and one as a diocesan priest cooperating with them, in a royal free town whose population and garrison were largely Protestant.

In 1619 Bethlen's forces occupied Košice. Protestant soldiers and local Calvinist authorities arrested the three priests, imprisoned them, and demanded that they abandon the Catholic faith and accept Calvinism. Catholic accounts, later used in the beatification and canonization processes, state that they refused. Over several days they were tortured. On 7 September 1619 they were killed. Traditional narratives describe beheading and severe physical abuse, after which the bodies were thrown into a drain or refuse pit. Independent contemporary forensic records are lacking; the violent death of the three priests in Košice on that date, in the setting of the Bethlen uprising and confessional coercion, is the consistent historical core of the tradition, while the more lurid details of torture come chiefly from later hagiographical and process testimony.

The remains were later recovered through the intervention of Catholic nobles, including members of the Forgách circle, and were preserved as relics, which in subsequent centuries were divided among churches in the region. A cult of martyrdom took root in Catholic Hungary and among Jesuits, Croats, and Poles. After canonical investigation, Pope Pius X beatified the three priests on 15 January 1905. Pope John Paul II canonized them on 2 July 1995 in Košice, during an apostolic visit to Slovakia, presenting them as witnesses of fidelity and as a sign of the shared Christian heritage of the Croatian, Polish, Hungarian, and Slovak peoples. Their feast is kept on 7 September. Modern historical writing generally accepts the killing in 1619 while treating graphic torture stories with the caution due to sources shaped by later sanctification processes. They remain among the best-known Catholic martyrs of the early modern Hungarian kingdom, honoured in Catholic tradition as men who died rather than deny their faith, and situated by political historians within the wider war against Habsburg and Catholic restoration.
