Biography

Mary An Linghua was a Chinese Catholic laywoman martyred in 1900 during the Boxer Rebellion. She was born in 1871 in the region of Jing County in Hebei province, northern China, then under the Qing dynasty. She belonged to the An family, a Catholic household in a rural community that had received the Christian faith in the nineteenth century through missionary work in Zhili. Little is recorded of her early life beyond her membership in this family of believers.

In 1900 the Yihetuan uprising, known in the West as the Boxer Rebellion, spread across northern China. The movement combined anti-foreign sentiment with hostility toward Christianity. In Hebei, Boxer bands attacked Catholic villages and families, often offering Christians the choice of apostasy or death. Four women of the An family, including Mary An Linghua together with Mary An Guo, Anna An Xin, and Anna An Jiao, were among those seized in their locality, identified in later sources as Liujiazhuang or the nearby village of Anjia in Jing County. Traditional accounts state that they refused to renounce the Catholic faith.

They were killed on 11 July 1900. Mary An Linghua was twenty-nine years old. Reports of the massacre of Christians in Jingxian and neighboring districts describe summary executions and other violence; the precise manner of her death is not independently documented in surviving civil records and is known chiefly through testimonies gathered for the ecclesiastical process. She died together with the other An women as part of the larger wave of killings that claimed many Chinese Christians that summer.

Mary An Linghua is venerated as one of the Martyr Saints of China. She was included among the 120 Catholics, both missionaries and Chinese faithful, canonized by Pope John Paul II on 1 October 2000. Their collective liturgical memorial is observed on 9 July. Individual biographical details about her remain sparse, as is typical for many of the lay Chinese martyrs of 1900 whose lives were recorded primarily in the context of their deaths for the faith.
