Biography

Short Description

Mary de Cervellon (also known as María de Cervelló, Maria de Cervelló, or Mary of Help / María de Socós) was a thirteenth-century Catalan religious sister and the foundress of the first community of nuns of the Order of Our Lady of Mercy, commonly called the Mercedarians. Traditional hagiographical accounts place her birth in Barcelona on 1 December 1230, in a family of the Catalan nobility; her father is named in the sources as Guillem (William) de Cervelló. Barcelona in this period belonged to the Crown of Aragon. From youth she was noted for piety and for works of charity toward the poor, the sick, and Christian captives, a cause that had special prominence in Catalonia because of warfare and piracy in the western Mediterranean.

After the death of her parents she disposed of her inheritance in favor of the needy and sought a more structured religious life. The Mercedarian Order, founded in Barcelona by Saint Peter Nolasco in the early thirteenth century for the redemption of Christian captives, attracted her. In 1265 she and several companions received the Mercedarian habit and formed the first female community of the order in Barcelona, of which she became superior. The sisters lived under a rule of prayer, austerity, and support for the order’s ransoming work. She is regarded as the first Mercedarian nun.

Later tradition attributes to her numerous miracles, above all interventions on behalf of seafarers. She is said to have appeared in the heavens holding a light or lantern to guide ships through storms, which gave rise to her popular title María de Socós (Mary of Help). These stories, which belong to the hagiographical tradition rather than to strictly contemporary documentation, explain her enduring association with sailors and those in danger at sea. She lived a life of notable austerity and was credited with wonders both during her lifetime and after death.

She died in Barcelona on 19 September 1290 and was buried in the Mercedarian church of that city. A local cult developed around her tomb. Pope Innocent XII confirmed her cult for the Mercedarian Order in 1692 (an act treated as equivalent to beatification for an ancient cult). She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church, with liturgical feast on 19 September. She remains especially invoked as patroness of sailors, of those in peril at sea, and of the Mercedarian nuns.
