Biography

Short Description

Elizabeth Lange, who in religion became Mother Mary Lange, was born in Santiago de Cuba in the late eighteenth century to a family of Haitian origin that formed part of the free colored population of the Caribbean. Her household was French-speaking and Catholic, and she received an education that included literacy unusual for women of African ancestry at the time. The Haitian Revolution and its aftermath sent waves of refugees through Cuba and onward to North American ports. Lange arrived in Baltimore in the 1810s and settled among the city’s French-speaking Black Catholic community.

Finding that African American children in Maryland were excluded from most schools, Lange and her companion Marie Magdelaine Balas began teaching Black girls in their home. Their informal academy offered reading, writing, arithmetic, and catechesis when even many Catholic institutions refused Black pupils. In the late 1820s the Sulpician priest James Nicholas Joubert, who had lived in Saint-Domingue, sought a lasting means of providing religious instruction to Black children and proposed that Lange and her companions form a religious sisterhood. With the approval of Archbishop James Whitfield, four women—Lange, Balas, Rosine Boegue, and Almaide Duchemin—received the habit of the Oblate Sisters of Providence on 2 July 1829. Lange, taking the name Sister Mary, was chosen as first superior of the first enduring congregation of African American women religious in the United States.

The early years of the Oblates were marked by poverty, racial prejudice from civil society and from some white Catholics, and the struggle for ecclesiastical recognition and support. The sisters conducted St. Frances Academy, took in orphans, visited the poor, and during the cholera epidemics of the 1830s nursed the sick when others would not. Lange served as superior in the community’s first years and again in later terms; in other periods she performed ordinary convent labor—cooking, laundry, and classroom teaching. She remained at the Baltimore motherhouse until her death on 3 February 1882.

The Oblate Sisters of Providence survived the Civil War, Reconstruction, and the Jim Crow era and continue educational and pastoral work. Lange’s cause for canonization was introduced by the Archdiocese of Baltimore in 1991. After diocesan and Roman investigations, Pope Francis recognized her heroic virtues in 2023, granting her the title Venerable. She is remembered as a pioneer of Black Catholic religious life and of Catholic education for African Americans.
