Biography

Short Description

Marie Martha Chambon was born Françoise Chambon on 6 March 1841 in the hamlet of Croix-Rouge at Chambéry in Savoy. At the time of her birth the region still formed part of the domains of the House of Savoy within the Kingdom of Sardinia; it was annexed to France in 1860. She grew up in a poor peasant household and received little formal education, working in her youth as a shepherdess. Contemporary and later accounts describe her as simple, obedient, and already given to prayer. In the 1860s she entered the Monastery of the Visitation of Holy Mary at Chambéry as a converse sister, that is, a lay sister charged with the domestic labor of the house rather than the choral recitation of the Divine Office. She received the religious name Marie-Marthe (Marie Martha) and remained in that hidden vocation until her death.

The Visitation Order, founded in the early seventeenth century by Francis de Sales and Jane Frances de Chantal, emphasized gentleness, humility, and an interior life modeled on the Heart of Christ. The same order had already given the Church Margaret Mary Alacoque, whose seventeenth-century visions at Paray-le-Monial shaped modern devotion to the Sacred Heart. Within this tradition Sister Marie-Marthe lived an outwardly ordinary conventual life of cooking, housework, and community observance. She was not a choir nun and left no independent body of writings. Her health was frequently poor. Those who knew her stressed her lack of learning and her submission to her superiors, who took down the statements she made about her prayer.

From her early years in the monastery she reported visions and locutions of Jesus Christ focused on his five wounds. According to the notes preserved by the Chambéry community, Christ asked her to honor the Holy Wounds, to offer them in reparation for sin, for the conversion of sinners, and for the relief of the souls in purgatory, and he taught her a chaplet prayed on ordinary rosary beads, with specific invocations for the wounds of the hands, feet, and side. These claims were kept within the cloister during her lifetime. Only after her death did the Visitandines of Chambéry begin to circulate the prayers and a narrative of her experiences. The resulting Chaplet of the Holy Wounds, sometimes called the Rosary of the Holy Wounds, gave a distinctive popular form to a theme already present in earlier Catholic piety. Historians of devotion treat the revelations as reported private experiences recorded by her community, not as independently documented public events.

Sister Marie-Marthe died at the Visitation monastery in Chambéry on 21 March 1907. In the decades that followed, pious biographies and collections of the prayers associated with her name were published, and a reputation for holiness grew around her memory. A cause for beatification was introduced, and she has been referred to as a Servant of God, but she has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church and has no official place on the general liturgical calendar. The Holy Wounds chaplet continues to be used in some Catholic circles. Because the principal sources are conventual notes and later hagiographical literature rather than a large contemporary public record, many particulars of her inner life cannot be verified outside that tradition. What is historically secure is that she was a nineteenth-century Savoyard lay sister of the Visitation whose name became attached to a modern form of devotion to the wounds of Christ.
