Biography

Short Description

Mary Wŏn Kwi-im, known in baptism as Maria, was a Korean laywoman and virgin martyr of the Catholic Church. She was born in 1819 in Yongin, in Gyeonggi Province, during the Joseon dynasty, into a family that had accepted the Catholic faith. Catholicism had entered Korea in the late eighteenth century largely through lay scholars and Chinese Christian books, without an initial missionary presence, and it remained a prohibited teaching. The Confucian state regarded it as a threat to ancestral rites, social hierarchy, and royal authority, and successive governments launched violent suppressions. Mary was baptized in her mid-teens and took the name Maria. She chose to remain unmarried and to live as a consecrated virgin, a decision that ran against prevailing expectations of marriage and lineage and that placed her among a circle of Catholic women who supported one another in prayer and instruction.

In 1839 the Gihae persecution broke out under the regency associated with Queen Sunwon. Catholic households were denounced, property was seized, and believers were imprisoned. Mary was arrested and taken to the capital, then called Hanyang (modern Seoul). Interrogators sought both a recantation and the names of other Christians. Surviving missionary correspondence of the Paris Foreign Missions Society and Korean Catholic records of the period describe the methods used in these prisons: repeated beatings, the application of heated implements, and the twisting or crushing of limbs. Mary refused to apostatize or to perform the required rites. She was condemned as a criminal for her religion and was beheaded at the execution ground outside the Small West Gate (Seosomun) in 1839, when she was about twenty years old.

Her death belonged to a larger group of laypeople, catechists, and a small number of clergy killed in 1839, later commemorated together with martyrs of 1846 and 1866. Seventy-nine of these Korean martyrs, including Mary Wŏn Kwi-im, were beatified by Pope Pius XI on 5 July 1925. The complete group of 103—forty-seven women and fifty-six men, ninety-two of them lay faithful—was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 6 May 1984 in Seoul, the first canonization ceremony held outside Rome. Their common feast is kept on 20 September. Mary is remembered as a young lay virgin whose steadfastness illustrates the character of the early Korean Church, which was founded and long sustained by laity under conditions of clandestine practice and repeated state violence.
