Biography

Short Description

Mary Yi Seong-rye, known in Korean as Yi Seong-rye with the baptismal name Maria (Mary), belongs to the history of Catholicism in Korea during the Joseon period. The pairing of a Korean surname and given name with a Christian baptismal name is characteristic of Korean Catholics from the late eighteenth century onward, when the faith took root through lay study of Catholic books that had entered the peninsula from Beijing, rather than through an initial missionary foundation. Mary was among the baptismal names most often given to women converts and to daughters born into Catholic households, in honor of the mother of Jesus. The surname Yi (Lee) was common among both the yangban elite and commoner families, and several women of that clan appear in Korean martyrologies; the present subject must not be casually identified with better-documented namesakes such as the canonized Magdalene Yi, Agatha Yi, Barbara Yi, Lutgardis Yi, or Teresa Yi without a source that matches the full name Seong-rye.

The Catholic community of late Joseon Korea was unusual in being organized for years by laity, including women who catechized relatives, copied or memorized doctrine, sheltered fugitives, and maintained household worship when priests were absent or in hiding. State hostility to the new religion, which was seen as undermining Confucian ritual, ancestral rites, and loyalty to the throne, produced repeated persecutions, notably in 1791, 1801, 1839, 1846, and 1866. Laywomen were arrested, interrogated, and in many cases tortured and executed, often by beheading or strangulation at sites associated with the capital, including the area of Seosomun in Seoul. Church records later gathered these witnesses into large groups for beatification and canonization, so that many holy women are remembered primarily as members of a cohort rather than through a full independent vita.

Publicly available historical and hagiographical literature in European languages does not furnish a securely documented birth year, native village, husband’s name, number of children, or exact date and place of death that can be attributed to Mary Yi Seong-rye without risk of confusion with other Korean Catholic women of similar name. Standard lists of the 103 Korean Martyrs canonized in Seoul in 1984, and the more widely circulated individual biographies of priest-martyrs such as Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, do not by themselves settle whether this precise romanization corresponds to one of those saints, to one of the 124 companions of Paul Yun Ji-chung beatified in 2014, or to another locally commemorated figure. Variant romanizations of Korean (Seong-rye, Sŏng-nye, Sung-rye, and the like) further complicate identification. Where archival or printed sources do not clearly establish a fact, it is omitted rather than inferred from the lives of better-known martyrs.

What can be said with caution is that Mary Yi Seong-rye is remembered as a Korean Catholic woman, not as a member of a religious order, and that she held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see. Claims about marriage, children, a specific feast day, patronages, and the pontiff who beatified or canonized her are not confirmed here. Korean Catholic memory often commemorates laywomen of the Joseon persecutions collectively, especially on the general feast of the Korean Martyrs, but assigning that observance, or any other, to this individual would exceed what the available record securely supports. Further research in Korean diocesan archives, the beatification and canonization acts, and contemporary interrogation records would be required before a fuller, dated biography could be written.
