Biography

Short Description

Mary Yi Yŏn-hŭi (Korean: 이연희; baptismal name Maria) was a Korean Catholic laywoman and martyr of the Joseon period, venerated as one of the 103 Korean Martyr Saints. She was born in 1804 in Korea. Catholicism had taken root in Korea in the 1780s through Korean lay scholars who encountered Catholic books and, in some cases, received baptism in Beijing, and who then formed communities without resident priests. The Joseon government condemned the religion as heterodox, contrary to Confucian ritual—especially ancestral rites—and potentially subversive. Edicts of prohibition were followed by arrests and executions in 1801, 1839, 1846, and 1866. Mary Yi Yŏn-hŭi belonged to the generation that kept the faith in hiding, gathering for prayer, instruction, and, when priests were present, the sacraments.

In 1839 the Gihae persecution unfolded under the regency of the Queen Dowager. Catholics were hunted, imprisoned, and tortured to force them to recant and to reveal other believers. Those who would not apostatize were sentenced to death. According to the tradition preserved in the causes of beatification and in later martyrologies, Mary Yi Yŏn-hŭi was arrested, remained firm in her confession of the Catholic faith, and was executed in 1839, the date commonly given as 3 September. She is often associated with the executions carried out at Seoul, where many of the 1839 martyrs were beheaded outside the Small West Gate (Seosomun). She was about thirty-five or thirty-six years old. Contemporary records for individual laywomen are typically brief: a name, a baptismal name, an age, and the fact of death for the faith. There is no securely documented information in standard historical sources concerning her parents, her exact native village or town, a spouse, or children.

The memory of the Korean martyrs was maintained by surviving Catholics and by the Paris Foreign Missions Society priests who later served in Korea and compiled lists and short notices. Mary Yi Yŏn-hŭi was beatified on 5 July 1925 by Pope Pius XI among a group of seventy-nine Korean martyrs, principally victims of the 1839 and 1846 persecutions. On 6 May 1984 Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Andrew Kim Taegon, Saint Paul Chong Hasang, and 101 companions, including Mary Yi Yŏn-hŭi, at an outdoor Mass in Seoul. The canonization emphasized that the Korean Church had been founded by laity and watered by the blood of martyrs, among them numerous women. The Catholic Church keeps their collective feast on 20 September.

Mary Yi Yŏn-hŭi is therefore known to history less through a full personal biography than through her place in this communion of witnesses. She represents the many Korean women who, in the early nineteenth century, accepted imprisonment and death rather than deny baptism and the Church. Her cult is that of the Korean Martyrs as a group; she has no widely attested individual patronages of places or causes. For the historian, her life illustrates both the reach of Catholicism among Korean women of the Joseon era and the limits of the surviving documentation, which often preserves little more than a name and a martyrdom. For the Church, she is a saint whose fidelity, however sparsely recorded in detail, is celebrated with her companions as a foundation of Korean Christianity.
